Urethane based paints/clear coats are impervious to fuel, or enamel with a hardener.

Assuming it needs no Bodywork, would look like crap to powder over dings and dents.

Well, it's not a Mr Clean job..there are a couple small dimples but no major dents. But then it's a rider not a show piece..I was just trying to clean up and preserve the tank for the next 25 years..
Got the rust and scabs cleaned from the bottom and it looks 98% better.
If a guy wants to pick it over he'll see the minor flaws..but I sure don't think it looks like crap!! No argument it was worth $60...
