I may have done something stupid...

So this '86 Big Red has a steering lock/helmet holder, so I decided to give it a try... now I can't unlock it. I know the key works, because I used it to lock the steering. I tried some graphite to lube it, didn't help. Is there a secret?

Try wiggling the helmet holder hook (or push in on it) as you try to turn the key. It is a long shot, but it has worked for me before.

I wiggled it more than a stripper with bills to pay... just won't budge Dan.

Try turning the key in the other direction... and thank you for a joke that I never heard before (just hope I don't re-tell it to you).

You may have to take off the part on the triple tree (I think you can still do that with the llock engaged) - the pin may be in a bind...are you positive you have the right key? recal, you can engage the lock with anything, but you need the right key to disengage...may be time for a hacksaw

On my 250sx i can undo the two screws and remove the lock, even while it is engaged. Pretty much the same bike, it should have the same design for the lock

I am a lurker that just happens to learn a bit here and there. I have owned several bikes, but I am new to trikes. My suggestion to atc350exer was based on my experience with 2 wheelers. Nubbinz, thank you for this info.

    Hello

A locksmith can either pick it or hand make a new key if there is no code, they are also mobile, ask for price, typically $25-$100.00.

The only way to remove the lock is to take the top triple clamp off, as it is in the way of one of the 2 screws that hold it on. I may just have to do that.
And tripledog, I made that joke up specifically for you, I knew you'd appreciate it.

You could take it to fairs and set up next to the kids pony rides, $1 per ride, do 3 laps. Sorry I'm no help but hey, you could make a few bucks on the weekends. Lol

Let someone else try it, perhaps a small kid. You might be surprized what a different set of hands can do. Just don't tell them there is a problem!

Yep, I wasn't kidding. I've seen it work many times. We know it locked, so there is no good reason it shouldn't unlock. Just needs the right touch and he will end up breaking the key off if he keeps at it. BTW ATC350, I'd raise the front end off the ground to do any future wiggling.

If its maybe a matter of the pins not getting pushed, ive started atvs by bending a regular size paper clip into a rectangle, forcing it into the key hole with needle nose pliars, pulling the two sides outwards and twisting. But if the lock is just seized up, i guess that wont help much. You can also try raking the key in and out while twisting. One other method is put the key in, pull it out ONE tooth, twist and while twisting, tap the key in with a . Ive played with locks a good bit and all of these methods work, just not every time. Just thought id share that
