    250sx oil changed.. leaks now

Ive had my 250sx done for a few days now and have been riding it. Just did a royal purple oil change, and within 5 seconds of starting it, it was leaking oil from the top of the oil filter cover fast. I installed a new cover o ring, and the one that goes on the filter cover and is against the rubber on the filter. I can tell its leaking from the oil passage at the top of the cover. It didnt leak before, and i didnt see any kind of o ring. Was i supposed to put rtv on the cover, am i missing an o ring, or what?

My guess is you'd figure it out real quick if you took it apart.

    Hello

If a part has a groove it typically takes an o ring. Your filter cover takes 1 large 1 small. See link below. Never use any sealer on an o ring. If you are missing one you can possibly get one that fits from the any local motorcycle shop or local hardware store.

Parts fiche see items 34 and 35, o rings

That small O ring fell out on me when I was putting my cover on. I didnt see that it fallen
out at first, but just before tightening up the cover, I saw it on the ground.
I can see that with out it, it would more than likely leak. It sucks since you just did an oil change
but you are going to have to pull the cover off to see if its missing.

    Hello Nubbinz

UPNATM's post reminded me that you can apply a thin layer of lite grease like bel ray to hold them in place during installation. Do not use dark gray or black grease, it has graphite in it.

I actually managed to put the small o ring in the wrong place. I put it on the inside nub on the cover, it fell out so i never noticed it came from that groove in the engine.. or the fact that groove was even there. The lesson learned is dont work on trikes in the dark while sleep deprived
