ATTN NY members interested in registering their trikes

First of all, I'm not sure what forum would be most appropriate to post this. But I wanted this to be seen by as many members as possible. So Mods, if you feel the open forum is the more appropriate place feel free to move it there and I offer my apology.....


If you are a NY resident and want to register a trike that you think or even know has never been registered, this thread is for you!

You will need 3 out of the following items...

1: A digital picture or rubbing of the VIN or
2: A police statement indicating they have verified the VIN you are trying to register matches the machine you want to register
3: DMV form MV82 (Application for a new registration)
4: DMV form MV51B (statement of ownership)

This works as long as the trike has no registration history. In other words, when the DMV clerk runs that VIN and it comes back as previously registered you are done at this point. You may get different answers as to your next course of action to acquire a registration.

So, you can go to the NYS DMV website and print off the forms needed that I listed above. Fill them out completely and to the best of your knowledge. If you are unsure of anything, leave it blank and the DMV clerk will help you figure out what should be marked down.

I did the police verification method today to register the '85 250r I just built this winter.

All I did was visit the Sheriffs station and ask to have a deputy verify my VIN and print up a statement that he verified the VIN on my trike.

Then, I went into the DMV and presented the Sheriff's statement along with my filled out MV82 and MV51B.

When the clerk ran the VIN, it came up with no history as I expected. Got it registered, but I was issued a NON-transferrable reg. All of the paperwork will be sent to Albany where they will double check the VIN and paperwork I submitted to make sure everything is on the up and up. Once that clears they will send me my transferable reg.

Just thought I would post this up for my fellow NYer members. It's really not as bad as it may seem and only costs $12.50 for the reg, and an additional $12.50 for your new plate. Subsequent renewals will be only $12.50 per year as long as you don't lose or trash your plate and need a replacement...

Thanks ridered.I have done the rubbing of the vin on several atcs.If you have owned it more than three years you dont need anything from the previous owner.

Seems different DMV's are different too. I bought my 250R from a guy up in watertown. He had bought it on ebay from California and had just the prior own in Cali's registration for it, but had lost the title. They let me register it, but I got a letter from Albany saying that it was non-transferable until I got a copy of the title from California and had all the documentation of it until my ownership. A couple years later I went to my local DMV and was renewing it, and she thought odd that it showed "non-transferable" on the registration. So I told her the story.... and she said... I can fix that.... and "voila"... it printed out with "transferable" on it. :-)

Yes, I have noticed that you can get slightly different instructions and requirements from different DMV workers from time to time.

My reggy I just got is also a Non-transferable. When she ran the VIN it came up with no history at all. (which is good)... Getting a non-transferable is part of the process in cases like this. Albany has to run a little deeper check on the VIN and make sure all the paperwork submitted is on the up and up. Beadle350x registered a no-history 350x for the first time about a year ago. Seems like he got his transferable reggy after about a month or so..

Great info, Ride Red, and thank you! I want to register my trikes primarily to establish proof of ownership. Some of the folks around here have sticky fingers, if you know what I mean.

Absolutely!

I think the annual reg fee in NY is pretty reasonable at $12.50 whether you are doing it solely for proof of ownership documentation or to be able to ride some of the areas open to ATV's. Of course the first time you reg, you have to pay an additional $12.50 for your new license plate..... But you keep that as long as you don't lose or destroy it.

Hope this is not too off topic, but do I need, or can I even obtain, insurance for my trikes? I don't even want to wager a guess as to how expensive liability insurance would be on a vehicle that was deemed unsafe, and thus banned from production, decades ago.

No problem insuring your trikes. I get it through a local provider in my town, but the policy is from Progressive. It costs me $97 per year for NYS minimum liability to insure a pair of '85 250r's, '03 Z400, and an '88 LT230. Only downside is if you have more than 4 machines to insure, you have to start a second separate policy. They won't put more than 4 on one policy, and thats Progressive and just about every other major insurance provider.

No problem on the "hijack" at all... totally related, especially for NY based trikers!

Thanks again for more great info, Ride-Red 250r. Looks like a call to Flo at Progressive is in the works. I will likely only insure one of my 250 Big Reds and my 200 Big Red. Just nice to know it CAN be done, and cheaper than I would have thought at that!

Hey, if you ever want to ride Lewis County, (AKA Tug Hill) give me a shout! I have an '84 BR and I don't always have to ride fast. Be cool to get a gang of Big Reds together for a ride sometime!

All that is required to ride seasonal roads open to ATV's is registration, insurance, and of course, a helmet. No riding double unless a proper 2-up seat attachment is in place.

Special trails that run on county forest land and some private land require a special permit from the Tug Hill Adirondack ATV Association. These are mainly what I refer to as "goat trails". More like you would find out in your own woods.

PM me if you are interested in learning more. I would love to see more trikes up there than just me, the brother in law and the 5 or 6 other trikes I have seen the last 3 years of riding up there!


Oh, and FWIW, I am 35 years old, married, and have a spotless driving record. As you know, age and driving record has an impact on insurance rates... Just to give you an idea of what to expect based on your own personal circumstances....

Tug hill is a geat spot to ride. When I had insurance couple years ago I could have 4 machines on 1 policy.Not a bad deal for the price.On a side not its ironic that Bruce purchased his 250r from Watertown I work in Watertown and live about 15 miles from there. Small world.

dang thats a hefty list of stuff to do for a registration! The more I see you NY'ers post up about registrations (this is like the 3 rd thread this year) the more I think about doing mine. I get worried about what will show up if I was to call and have the vin's run. I now own 4 bikes (500 conversion, 250r, 04kfx700 and an 87 250sx). I would be devastated if anyone of them came back stolen etc and I was charged with something and the bike(s) confiscated. Probably a big lesson there in running vins before bringing a new bike home. Thats interesting that NY has a 3 year clause of ownership that grants you ownership of the machine. I might make some calls here nad copy your NY thread idea for us MO people interested in registering. thanks man!
