    Big red clutch adjustment.

With my 85 Big Red, when I bring it to an idle, at the crest of a hill, the clutch will disengage, and the bike, while still in first gear, will free wheel, down the hill, continously picking up speed. If I burp the throttle, the clutch will re-engage and the bike will have compression braking once again. Is this a simple clutch adjustment, if so how do I do it??Or is this a sign of somthing else? I have two 85 big Reds and the other one doesnt do this. The clutch stays engaged until you either stop, or put it into neutral. The 85 with the problem, also wines when the throttle is let go and compression braking kiks in. Hope this helps. This problem could be a real sefety factor to an unsuspecting rider.

Though I haven't experience it myself I have seen other discussions on this..

I believe the issue you are having is with the one way clutch. In addition to your complaint they have also spoken of a whirring noise when the engine is shut off too.

Yes, I forgot to mention (frankly didnt know if the two were related) but it does whine when it is shut down...Is this a simple adjustment on the side of the tranny/engine?? Iv never touched the clutch adjustment on either of my bikes...ever. How is this done?

To adjust the clutch you need to loosen the 14mm nut on the right side of the engine near the kick, then turn the screw in the centre of it counterclockwise until you feel resistance. Then from that point turn it back clockwise 1/4 turn, then tighten the 14mm nut while being sure the screw doesn't turn with the nut..

But this doesn't have anything to do with this issue you have..you will need to order this part : CLUTCH, ONE-WAY (Honda Code 4083051)Part # 131179003975

It's about $100 and is still dealer available to my knowledge..then remove the right side cover and clutch assy to access and replace..

Probably should order the right side cover gasket also and oil change kit..since you have to drain the oil to remove the cover..

So does this mean that there is somthing broken or worn out, or is this an update or something that my other 85 didnt get>And if this is somthing that is worn out, should I be expecting my other bigred to follow suite, as they both have similar mileage on them?

It's not a wear and tear part like clutches or brakes..it's just an incidental failure.

I've never had it happen on one of my trikes..but others have experienced it.

It may never happen to your others..

OK...where I live...North western Ontario Canada, there isnt exactly a Honda dealer down the street. Is this a part that the aftermarket has adopted...ebay perhaps?? Would be alot easier for me.

K...done a little research, and found a couple on ebay. These are used, but come with different pieces as well...how would I know what I need to replace before I buy one? , can it continue to be driven like this...has been driven like this for several years, or is this a ticking time bomb, and , does anyone know exactly how to change one? Would probubly be easier to ask if anyone has a manual with this operation spelled out in it?

I don't personally know what may result from not fixing this..as I mentioned I never had this problem.

The instructions for installation are pretty well detailed in the shop manual you can download from this link..http://www.oscarmayer.net/atc/manuals/

As far as the new/used parts supply..that is up to you. I personally go for new..but that is my opinion. You gotta do, what you gotta do..

Definitely go NEW... One guy on here a while back had the same problem and put in a used one and after all the work a couple weeks later it happened again, second time around he put a new one in and it was fixed. Its a fair amount of work to tear into and do it, needs special tools for the job as well, so do it right the first time.

Yeah I see that..no 250ES on the manual page..you can use the 250SX manual for the engine repair. It's the same engine..

Not sure what "The other link on that page doesnt open!" means though??

All the manuals that were hosted on mega upload are no longer available. Mega was shut down by the feds. I actually posted in the Sticky thread about this asking for someone to fix it. Never got a response.
