picking up an 86 200x basket case

A friend of a friend has an 86 200x that needs a top end. From the pictures, it looks like a total basket case but he isn't wanting much for it. I'm not in a position to start another build but figure if I can get it cheap enough, it might be worth messing with. The main things I'm hoping are in good shape is the tank and front fender. The rear fender is toast by the looks of the pictures.

These pics are off his facebook, so I hope they work. They all kind of suck but at least show what is there.

Any suggestions what the thing might be worth? I know the 86/87 200x's are little bit harder to come by but that may or may not mean much.

    Thanks!

All depends on how much you are willing to spend on it. If you have factory parts, they will bring a fair share of $ on ebay, or from me if you have some parts I would like Since the back fender is shot, I wouldn't give over $350 for it, but that's my opinion.

If your intention is to make a rider of it then up front, no matter what you get it for its gonna be an expensive journey..

No one here, myself included has bought a machine in that condition and had opportunity to say they got a cheap rider.

The money you'll put out will far outweigh the cost of buying a whole machine.

You'll be doing it for the love of it and satisfaction only!!

Therefore if you have to ask us it's probably a bad investment, because if you were really that horny for the machine you'd have bought and said to heII with how crazy people thought you were!!

I bought a running 84 200x for $400, Its not not running and has $4000 into it. That 200x is worth more in parts. I'd give ya friend $200 for it. Its worth nothing more...i dont care if it was a 1987 its all appart needing expensive parts.

plus is has black 83-84 200x forks on it.

if you can get it for 2 bills or less then go for it. the 86/87 200x was imho the best small cc bike ever made. i love my 86 and i have put that thing thru hell. the only thing i have had to fix is second gear and that was my fault for not getting a new chain. on a side not if the rear axle is bent run away i have been looking for a rear axle for three years with no luck other than that i would get it.

They turn into money pits really fast - especially something like th 2nd gen X that Honda didn't make a lot of (compared to a 1st gen).

Cheap or free might be worth stashing for a future project.

Buy it cheap and throw the parts up in the classifieds so you can save some more 2nd gens that need parts.

Buy it for parts, I am interested in a headlight guard, tail light, grab bar, and tool box if it has those.

Thanks guys for the replies. I was kind of figuring it would take a lot to rebuild so if I get it I will be parting it out.

Anyone who doesn't have the pleasure of owning and riding a decent 86/87 200X is missing out. They are engineered completely different from the earlier model from the ground up. Very little crosses to the 83-85. I just wait until I see things cheap and keep buying and buying. I ended up with 3 frames, 3 complete motors and about 6 bottoms; Even found a crate motor for 700$ for another build. Didn't cost me much and it only took me 20 relentless days to build it.

I have found a shrunken rod crank, Super Trapp, A head ported by Mickey Dunlap, race cam, larger carb and nos forks.

Looking for tailights and mounts, toolboxes and headlights as well as guards can prove challenging.

I would have already bought it if it was close to me! I'm dying to get my hands on a 2nd gen 200x, even if it is a basket case. The way I see it, it costs me nothing to store it until I can start picking up parts here and there for it...

The R I just got running sat in my shed a sad rolling chassis for about 4 years before I brought it in the garage and started spending money on it.

Just another angle and my humble opinion.....

I don't care what anyone says. I would rather buy a beat up machine, and build it, fix it, spend time on it, and money. In the end you will have something to be proud of, and it will mean that much more to you. And you will know everything about the machine.

I don't know about you guys, but to me wrenching is just as fun as owning, and riding the machine. It makes it that much better when you bring an old poor trike back to life.

Yes, a complete machine can be had cheaper than fixing up an old broken one. But trust me, you'll love it that much more when you're done.
