Confused on 200x fork diameter?

Every search I did for the past couple of days brings up different fork diameters for the 200x. Did they change size b/tw the years? Maybe I was getting confused with sizes when they do the fork upgrades to 350x's and 250r's.

The triples from a 200x are what I plan on using for my "fat tire" '83 XR200("twin-shock" model) conversion up front, and then either fab up a swingarm or try to find a swing arm off of a Yamaha BW200 that won't kill the pocketbook. Then I'll use some dirt bike forks the same size as the 200x triples. The ones on the XR200 are only 31mm, it will also give me a disc-brake up front. I plan on making this bike street legal, only plan using it for just getting from trail to trail or making a beer run. I did find some DOT ATV tires online the other day, Black Diamond ATR - 6ply (lots of sizes to choose from and a nice tread pattern).

Here in Texas all we need for a dirt bike to be street legal is to have hi/lo beam, horn, brake/tail light, reflectors and a light on license plate, DOT tires, and insurance. First, I'll get the bike inspected (asking for the green sheet) as a dual sport conversion then go see the DMV and get my plates, and then do the swap to "fat tire".

Well, those are my plans.

I own 200x tripples forsale bored to 35mm and i ran 83-84 250r forks in mine...hell of an upgrade. 200x forks are tiny and have no travel

Well gentlemen, I take my cowboy hat off to you, and owe you all a cold beer. Thank you for the straight up answer. As I was searching it looks like 35mm forks offer more of a aftermarket spring selection in my case. Another question, do the 83-84 250r triples have a pinch bolt at the base of the triples like the 200x does? I was going to press out the xr200 stem and put it into the atc triples. I do not know the size of the xr200 stem, but I do know that it is welded into the lower triple (great) and the inside diameter is 0.635"(roughly 16mm). I have checked the micro-fiche and it looks like the xr200 has a smaller dia. steering stem, it uses 3/16" ball bearings and the atc's use 1/4" ball bearings. The part numbers are the same for the first five digits, but are different for the last six on all the upper and lower races b/tw all the bikes. Your help is greatly appreciated, thank you.

if you want to run 83 -84 forks on a 200x i have the entire set up forsale. 200x forks bored for 250R forks. you use the rest of your 200x stuff and its a bolt on.

250Rs tripples are different and so is the stem and the bearings. pics are in the classifies, the parts are on my bike in the avatar pic also. its works, i made it work. now im selling the solution. its not a cheap mod, but i made it less expensive the most can do it.

Just making sure you know what I am up to. I want to put dirt bike forks in the atc triples, I am turning my xr200 into a "fatcat" look-a-like. I was trying to go the easy route and see if I could press the xr200 stem into the atc triples. I can be done, just a little modification is needed and I am just trying to find the best/better route to go. So it is whether I need 350x triples with a xr200 stem or maybe 250r triples with xr200 stem. I can find dirt bike 35mm forks to fit I'm sure, also making sure they have an aftermarket spring for them.

you need 350x tipples with no rake. dirtbikes dont have rake intro tripples like atcs did. 350x was only atc with out rake in tripples.

I have been researching stem diameters and the xr200 that I have is 24mm at bottom and 22.5mm at top, whereas the atc's are 26mm. I think if I can get triples with a pinch bolt for the lower stem, I could use some shim stock to make up the 2mm difference.
Even if I did use the 250r or 200x triples couldn't I run the front axle trailing instead of leading to make up for the rake issue?
How about the other triples like tri-z or tecate, wonder if they are compatable?

your making this harder then it needs to be. Stem dia does not matter fully. here is the list in which your XR200 bearings are 100% the same.

buy 83-84 atc250r trees and go from there. I would just use 83-84 atc250r forks then, you can use 83-85 200x front hub or 83-84 atc250r front hub, then you can use 83-85 200x front rim or 83-84 atc250r front rims. the front caliper is the same between the all year 200x and 83-84 250r. so is front rotor. if you want a front end thats gonna work just do what i'm telling you to do and scrap you xr200 forks.

Im very knowedgeable of these bikes, xr's also this is why I am saying just listen to me and make your life simple if you want a fat xr200r. the old missle kids used the 250r forks anyway with trailing axle. You can put a 250R front ender on it also which I have one Im gonna sell and its new.

not trying to be a dick, just simple solved your problem in 2 mins of looking for in information of usable website....allballs.

and more info. 200xs and 350xs used roller bearings and races so if you just use the bearings and racing you have in your xr its 100% plug and play with the 83-84 atc250r.

Oldskool, I really do appreciate what you are trying to tell me, and your information is very valuable, but you have the wrong bike that I am starting with. It's a '83 XR200 twin-shock, not the "R" version with the pro-link. The steering head on the frame looks to be the smaller version like that came on XR80's thru XL125's. And, AllBalls is where I started researching for the bearing sizes. That's why I was looking for a pinch bolt triple to replace the stem with the xr200 "twin-shock" one.

As far as forks, I thought the 250r's would be too short and make the bike look squatty...I don't know, I guess we will have to wait and see. I have seen a build on here that was a 250r that went 2-wheeled by Kasey and some dirt bike conversions on youtube using tecate triples with xr250 forks and a bw swinger.

That's what I got so far: 83-84 250r triples with xr200 "twin-shock" stem should solve the front.

Surely you must be kidding about using shim stock. The stems are not hardened so you can just weld it up then turn it down on a lathe to the correct press fit od.

Look at item #15 in the fiche above, it is a machined sleeve that presses into the lower stem from the top. It is to used partially to prevent “galling” to the aluminum triple clamp from the bearing race. This may take up your clearance also but you need to get a used one or make one. They are used on ALL aluminum lower triple clamps I know of so if you fab a stem for a lower clamp you at least need to run a hardened flat washer on the top of the clamp if you don’t fab this sleeve/collar.

Never remove metal from any triple clamp unless it is the fork stops!

people have bolted 200x front ends to atc200s before. your gonna end up with either 250R or 200x tripples, press swap the races and installed roller bearings and go ride. the best way to try stuff if buy cheap parts and try. searching too much is juzt a buzzkill. took me another 30 seconds to find this information and its not on 3ww.
