    1984 Yamaha 225dx problems.

    Hello guys,

I am a new member and a new owner of a 1984 225dx. I have done a search on this forum but cannot find and answer that i was looking for. I picked up a 225dx for my son and i am trying to get it going good. I can pull start it but when i installed a new battery it will not fire with the starter, I pulled the plug out and when i use the starter it looks like the spark is weak. New spark plug. new fuel and filter. Also when it is running it runs rough and has a clunking sound. not sure were the sound is coming from yet. any help here would be great.

    thank you.
    Jeff

what it sounds like to me is a slightly damaged stator, mine is lightly damaged and won't start with electric, but will start second or third pull. I recomend a manual, gasket and given a good look you will probably find I am right that there is light wear on the starting coil area from dirty oil.
rectum nothin damn near killed them

Thanks guys, I can pull start it on the first pull every time. I do notice that the Neutral light does not turn on when the switch is on. Could it be that the system thinks it is in gear? The wire going to the neutral switch is a bit loose. I do have a manual and have other projects around the house, so since it starts with the pull cord i am putting it on the backburner for now.

That neutral light problem is something I've encountered also on my 225DX and my brother's 250 Beartracker(basically the same rig with an extra wheel).

Anyway just turn the key on and leave it in neutral, then start wiggling the harness under the shifter that plugs onto the switch..if it's corrosion on the contact you should be able to get the light to come on. This should lead you to the point of concern to clean and seal up with dielectric grease..

I now have another issue. When i start it and run it for a few seconds, it seems that the exhaust manifold rigth at the engine gets really hot!! Is this because of a lean fuel mixture? I have adjusted the valves to the manual specs.
