'87 Tecate rebuild-Axle help needed?

Hi guys, just started rebuilding my '87 T3 and I'm trying to fit the brake hub onto a brand new Durablue axle (bought in 3WW shop), Ive removed the snap ring from that side and tried to slide it onto the splines but it won't reach the splines,it hits the smooth part of the axle,I also tried sending it all the way over from the sprocket side but that didn't work either,it feels like I'm doing something a bit stupid,because i have fitted axles to tri-zs and 250r"s with no problem, any help would be appreciated,thanks.

Did you get a chance to check the clearance of your dg pipe to your sprock head yet, If so does it clear ok?


If it will not reach the threads then either the axle is improperly machined or it is simply the wrong one.

Do you have a set of mic’s or calipers to measure the stock one vs the durablue? Measure shaft, thread and spline od.

Hub can not be installed from opposite side.

Forgot the following

From the outside the axle has a smooth machined surface running up to the axle threads, after that is the axle splines. Are you saying it will not slide up to or past the threads either? If it slides up onto the threads but not the splines, than the splines are brooched improperly. They may need some minor filling on the ends to get the hub started, once it looks like it will start maybe put anti seize on it before installing.

Thanks Barnett, I think what's is throwing me is the picture in the 3ww shop shows the anti fade nut fitting on the brake hub side,I'm going to have a better look tonight but it looks like it fits on the sprocket side, if so then the axle is no problem,I will keep you informed,thanks for replying, I will also try and post some photos of progress thus far, cheers.

It fits on the rotor side, I have mine installed.

Hi bronco east,I tried it every which way to fit it on the brake side-no chance,then put it sprocket side had axle lubed and fitted in fifteen minutes,the brake hub would not slide on the splines on the side with the space for the anti fade nut,fitted nice butted up to the snap ring on the other side then sprocket fitted nice on side with space for anti fade nut,I will post some pics soon,it won't make any difference will it ,whatever side it fits? Tri zs are held in place with locknuts on sprocket side.

Don't know what to tell ya, both my brake hub and sprocket hub slide right on.

Hi Broncobeast,mine slide straight on as well ,its just the anti fade locknut is on sprocket side,i can't see it being an issue,I'm happy enough with it being that way on,tried again to post photos-no good won't upload,regards.
