Need local atc 90 help San Diego area

Hello, I'm in the San Diego area and am looking for someone nearby that is very knowledgeable on these
Old atc's. I'm having trouble with the shifter, at first I thought it was a clutch problem but know I see it has something to do with the shifter or tranny. I have the case cracked and the clutch out and inspected, I am exceeding my skill level and that's why I'm calling for help

What is it doing / not doing?
I'm guessing you know what they're supposed to act like.
Looks like the shift drum stopper is ok?...a common prob with the 125 and some 90/110 models.

Stuck somewhere between hi and lo range?
could you get all 4 gears and neutral?
or was it hard to figure out which gear you were in.

Could you get it to shift normally just by rocking it fore and aft with the engine Not running?

Did it ever work correctly that you've experienced or is it new to you?
What, if any, situation caused it to start misbehaving?

So basically like the video stated it used to get stuck between gears, and sometimes not shift at all. All of the problems started with is what i thought was a clutch issue and may still be?? When i would ride the power would just fall off and slowly rev back just like a car clutch slipping. i tried to adjust clutch but to no avail, it only got worse and then it stopped shifting..... so consequently i removed the clutch, disassembled it, the only thing that seemed odd about the clutch is that the uppermost plate or disk had blueing like it got really hot. All of the disks below seemed fine nothing broken off all intact. (Of course I've never seen a new one)

So now I don't know what to do, like I said it is miraculously shifting with no problems. I just know if I put it back together it's gonna do it again. i wish I knew what was the primary issue to begin with..anybody have any suggestions?

I would buy new clutch plates and see if that cures the problem . I have seen perfectly "good" looking plates within spec still slip , they just get hard and go bad or were heated . Make sure you deglaze the steel plates but best to replace those as well . If that doesn't cure the problem it might be a worn transmission shift fork which will probably only show its issue under power .

Thanks ,I was debating that but I think I'll take your advice, it's apart might as well make it new right. What about the shifting though, it was still not shifting after the clutch and primary gear were removed, but like I said now its working....weird.

The shift actuator that activates the clutch could have been out of adjustment causing the shifting problem . Make sure you adjust the clutch per the manual .
Counter clockwise till you get some pressure and then back clockwise 1/4 turn .
If when you removed the clutch and it started shifting correctly its telling you were the problem might be .......

I misunderstood your question at first , but the tranny will not shift perfectly unless the motor is either running or something is spinning the counter shaft .
You just found a sweet spot while shifting in your video .

Great info and it really helps. So you think that I would be ok to put the rebuilt clutch back in, and just assume that the shifting problem was the clutch and or adjustment?

I would try the clutch rebuild first and if that doesn't do it its case split time ......

Looks like you can't go wrong with a new clutch parts party
since you have other machines it might fit??
What's the deal on 'soaking' the clutch disks in oil before assembly?
I guess they may come with instructions.
Sounds like something I'd forget to do.

I've had a few act real funny, lock nut wouldn't unlock so impossible
to set freeplay.

If your other trikes work, you can compare what shifting is like.
I usually try to shift them by rocking and finding all gears when
they don't run. Rock 'em back and forth while shifting all the way up and down and then neutral for sure.
Did you mean that it wouldn't shift and then you took the clutch off and then it would shift ok?
or do you think it was just random and seems to make no sense.
I only ask because I'd had a few make no sense at all.

If that shift drum stopper didn't look so pretty, I'd be real suspect that it's bent or loose,
but with my luck, it would be something no one has ever seen before.

I'm sure there are tons of 90/110 engines around for way cheap
if you get into real trouble.

I had read on another forum that said to to submerge the clutch basket in oil after assembly since it's a "wet" clutch?? (shortline10 is this ok?) when I adjusted the clutch (per manual) I kept test driving and i could never get it to help, then something just gave way and that's when it stopped shifting altogether. like shortline10 said I think if I rebuild the clutch i might be ok since it sees to be shifting now. trust me iv'e been riding these things long enough that I usually know right away when something is weird, and yes the other 90's in pics work great especially the red one it's like new I just wish I was a better mechanic. thanks tri again for the words of encouragement.
