    Gas tank issues

My Brother has a 1980 KAWASAKI KZ1000 A4 model...The previous owner had used some of that POR sealant stuff in it. Over the years, (mind you, the bike was in storage for close to 14 years with the tank being empty) that stuff is breaking off and causing big problems.. He cant get at it to try to break it up and take it out of the filler hole.. He took it to a couple of places and they told him that they couldn't do anything about it.. Does anyone here have any thoughts or suggestions, on how to take this crap out of the tank? His last resort is going to be cutting the bottom of the tank open, then peeling back the metal, then re-welding it back up... Thanks for the info if any... Tank

And old school trick was to put some bolts and nuts in the tank, and shake it all around for a while.. the bolts and nuts should knock free whatever is in there. I've used the same technique in cleaning some rust out of a tank and have been successful as well.

Pour in some MEK and some nuts, agitate it now and then, pour out... I have eaten the coatings out of tanks with MEK, worth a shot.

This will work but takes some time. You can sand blast the inside of the tank. Cover around the bung with good masking tape then duct tape to avoid hurting the paint. I used a hand held one with lots of psi. You will have to use the same product it had unless you get every bit of liner out, which is very hard to do. The sand blasting is a mess but it works. If you have a shop vac set it up near the filler bung to suck the dust. Once all blasted rinse with mec.

I forgot to mention, the part that is giving him a hard time is, there is a huge chunk of the stuff that got knocked loose and it is too large to get out of the filler neck. He tried breaking it up with pliers and other tools with no luck. Thanks for the suggestions guys

If you got big chunks like that then let it soak... Fill it with some MEK, be mindful of spilling it on anything painted including around the fill hole of the tank. Fill it up let it soak, yes it will take time, but it will dissolve that coating, and the large chunks will get soft enough that you can pull them out. Been there done that, it sucked!
