The Hondaa 185 is one of the most reliable motors ever built. Top speed with stock tires and gears probably approaches 45 mph. But they weren't built for speed.
The 175 is a smoker too... as opposed to that 4 stroker in the Honda...

The Good:

Honda all the way for reliability, it's a 4 stroke. I've had both. The Yamaha is a 2 stroke and is WAYYYYY faster. Come to think of it, I had more issues with my Yamaha 200e than I did with the 175. My 175 was a pain to start sometimes too but the 175 was funner to drive and the motor was way back in the frame so it wheelies like crazy as well.
The foot pegs on the 175 are weak too. I went through 2 sets before i had my buddy weld some better ones. But other than that I've never had a problem with my 175. Both are reliable if you maintain them and treat them well. Im a Honda guy but because of the speed and how much fun it is i would go with the 175. The 185 is better for mudding and hunting though. So its really a matter of what youre going to use it for.
this ones easy enough for me to answer, the yamahas a 2 stroke so of course its faster, but what do you see more of left? hardly any yamahas and alot of hondas that goes to show which ones a better trike, plus twith endless mods available from powroll, webcam and wiseco a 185 can be modded into a firebreather that will destroy the yamaha since no mods are available for it
I have both, and there is good and bad with both machines. If I had to keep just one (of any of my machines) it would be my 185. My 175 starts up in 1 pull no matter how hot or cold it is. My 185 is a hard starter in the cold. When I want to just pleasure cruise, I take my 185. If I need to beat the hell out of something, it's the 175. They made a hell of a lot more of the Hondas, which is why you see more of them today. I had 2 friends that bought 175's brand new back in 83, and they pounded the hell out of those things for years and never had a problem. And I do mean they abused those trikes like you've never seen. Anything old is going to have some issues depending on how it was maintained throughout the years. Overall, I'd take my 185.
I've been meaning to race the 2 machines and haven't gotten around to it yet. Believe it or not I think top speed they are pretty close. From 0-45 the 175 is much faster.
My Trikes:
1983 Honda 185s
1986 Honda 250es Big Red
1985 Yamaha 225 DX
1984 Yamaha 200EL "Yamahauler"
I raced a ytm 175 against my 225dx and it SMOKED me. Not like kind of close. More like, he looked like a dot after 15 seconds. I couldn't believe how fast the 175 is!
Prior to the race with the 175 I raced the same guy's ytm 125 and bet him $20 I'd win. The 125 beat my 225dx by a decent amount. So the 175 would SMOKE AND DESTROY a 185.
The stock 175 i raced had a much higher top speed than 45. My dx was clocked at 57 on a dirt road and the 175 blew my freaking fenders off. I do have to say this. The 175 is the ugliest damn 3 wheeler I ever saw
We named it the "Shoepick" after the fish.
