Picked up a 86 200X today, Pics included!

Well I have finally joined the illustrious, world renowned club of multiple ATC owners!

I have been shopping for a 6 speed 200X for a few months. Wanted to find something that needed some TLC but was not a total rat either. I plan to keep this machine basically stock and perfect for trails and mud. My R is just good for smooth groomed trails and ice really. Picked this 200X up for $600 with the following spare parts:

extra complete bottom end
extra rear shock
freshly rebuilt front caliper
extra tank and shrouds
extra front tire with disc
extra header pipe
brand new chain

It had been stripped down to have the frame and swinger painted.

Now I need some mechanical advice. it started fine, ran with no smoke. However it shifts HARD and only goes up to second. Any ideas what could cause this? The guy bought the extra bottom end and his plan was to just swap the jugs rather than get into the tranny. Sadly, some MORON welded the shifter peddle that is on the bike now! People are so F#@$ing stupid!

Fun project you have there, I would use the other bottom end rather then try to figure what is wrong with the shifting since they welded the shifter, it could be a bent shift fork. It sucks they took the lazy way out instead of replacing the stripped shaft. Dirtcrasher is a member here and he has a lot of experience in 86-87 200X model year ,maybe he would have an idea. I noticed there is a 83-85 200X headlight in the picture, if you need a correct bezel, Maier has the 1986 ATC250R headlight case that will fit the 86-87 200X.

My priority for now is getting her mechanically squared away and operable. After will come the superficial stuff. And I agree the wise thing to do is use the other bottom end. need to order a gasket kit.

The gear shifter plate is too hard and cracks, spring can fall off.

I highly doubt your tranny is the issue, more so the external shifting guts. If you pull the crank nut of be aware it is LH and 80% of them are stripped. You'll find the issue in there. Post back if your stumped.

I know how ya feel, the PO on my 200x also welded a lot of stuff including the shifter to the shaft. But, all is well for now so i dont have as much of a problem as you. Not a bad little project though. Should be one fun pain in the ass.

FYI - the extra tank and rear shock are from a 1st gen 200x. I wonder if the front hub/wheel that are on the bike are too. Need a shot of the wheel itself to tell.

haha yes sadly I noticed that the tank was 1st generation today. But the rear shock is as well?!?! Damn :/

I will have to take a close up of the front wheel hub for you.

Sadly it appears the kick starter spindle is pretty jacked up on both of these bottom ends. I checked bikebandit but they say the spindle is not available. Anyone know where you can attain one of these?

You'll need to know 17 mm or 19 mm for your kicker stuff.. Nice project.

17mm is either all or early 86, 19mm is late 86? and all 87. 17mm tend to sheer. Ebay, craigslist, here or 3wheeler.org is your best bet to find one. 83-85 will not work.

too bad I got a super sweet '87 ready to go ripping in my garage in NH......lol... ill wait for the post that's says its too slow and too small for you.... haha just kidding.. I love the extra junk they throw in as a deal - doesn't fit the bike though . good to see you didn't sell out of trikes man. TCB was the original kid we went riding with in New England 6 years ago. put some duro flat tracks on there and it will float nice on the trails.

Well that is what I have the R for, this one I am keeping so I can hit the mud and rough trails!
