I'm about to buy a 1985 250es and the guy says the only thing wrong with it is the kick start doesn't engage when you kick it. What are the common problems to
cause this and what are the ways to fix.

hi
try the search key.
lots of posts.
If I knew I would tell you for sure.
you may hear the words 'one way bearing' but wait till you get
the right info from someone who knows.
I'd say parts ARE avail and the job is do-able.
MAYbe some sort of funny socket and MAYbe a reverse thread....or not.
Sorry I don't have better info.
Your problem is the one-way bearing or sprag bearing, into the centrifugal clutch
If you change it yourself, don't forget the nut to remove the centrifugal clutch is left hand thread, clockwise to loose.

I thought there was something that engages and disengages right up where the kick start shaft goes in. I just don't know the name of the specific parts. I've rebuilt a fat cat
motor but not anything like this.
can you e start or push start it to see if it has
all the gears or timing chain slap?
check the gear oil in the rear axle too.
Ill find all that stuff out when i go to purchase it.
yupp.
Nice to know if it has all the gears
and no timing chain slap or loud valve clatter.
and the rear axle only hold like 3 point 3 oz
and it shoulkd be clear and NOT chocolate milkshake from water.
Even if clear, it like to be changed.
I put neodymium magnets on the drain plugs to attract
metallic debris.
Good luck, have fun and you're gonna be hooked and
want a few more....but that's perfectly normal, and why most of us are here
so you'll have plenty of sympathy.
Can you click on:

Oh believe me man I am hooked on atc's and anything Honda. I have a 1986 Honda fat cat, a 1986 second gen 125m little red, and a 1981 200s. The none Honda stuff I have are a 2004 Kawasaki bayou 250, and a 2001 yamaha yz 80 dirt bike that I converted into a trike, now it's a yamaha 80 tri motor. lol, I'm still adding to my collection. I'm on craigslist
everyday looking and hunting for trikes n bikes. I probly buy at least 2 or 3 machines a year. Often what I find needs work but I'm good at rebuilding and restoring anything.
Hello
Another possibility is one or more of the following items being bad or missing on the kickstarter shaft:
2, 3, 6,
http://www.cmsnl.com/honda-atc250es-...0.html#results
If you go look at it try kicking it over with the kick starter. If you feel some resistance at first then the kick starter goes down the rest of the way with little to no resistance then I am 99% sure Tri again is 100% correct on the one-way clutch. You might also hear a spinning sound after kicking it hard.
Another check is start the machine and then shut it off. If you hear a whirling sound followed by a clunk coming from the right side ( clutch ) cover then I am 100% sure the one-way clutch is the problem.
The one-way clutch fix is easy ( not that cheap though ). Parts in hand it takes less than 2 hrs to fix ( under a hour after you done it a few times. LOL ).
I have fixed / replaced 20-30 of these ( 250sx / 250es ) with bad one-way clutches. Maybe I am lucky as I have never had any with missing parts causing the problem.
Howdy
Hello, I also have a 85 250es that iv had for about 5 years when i bought it, the kick start was sloppy then, but iv always just used the electric start unless the battery was dead, but iv been wondering on this myself since i first got it.
When i go to kick it if i kick it from the very top i get about a quarter kick of solid clutch then it just bottoms out and makes a clicking noise for a few seconds but i can get the machine started over this way just takes a few try's and has to be warmed up, tho i haven't tryed much hoping not to mess up what is already going out, would just like to know how to fix this so i have a good back up for starting my Big Red! Thanks for any and all help on this
I am 100% sure your one-way clutch is bad. Just have to remove the right side ( Clutch ) cover, remove the centrifical clutch replace the one-way clutch and re-install all the parts and your good to go.
Howdy
