Good, I won't split the case unless its absolutely necessary and I havn't crossed that bridge yet.

    parts I need:

    Left engine cover 'spacer'
    left engine cover
    recoil assembly
air cleaner tube (that connects air cleaner box and carb)
    subtransmission
    gear shifter lever

Not that it's a LONG list I don't think, but I havn't found a local used parts source yet and just to buy the air cleaner tube on ebay was 40.00, just for example. The only sub trans was 100.00! (adds up quick). Most of the auctions I'm watching don't even have bidders and close with no bids, so obviously the used parts sellers are holding out for high dollar
Just doesn't make sense to pay that kinda prices for used parts, when, if you're diligent you you can find mostly intact parts bikes for 100. Speaking of which, yesterday, I bought a 1983 200e from a craigslist add for 100.00.

I must be getting addicted....I now have 3 trikes and only one is running lol.

Dang, i had a 125M left cover, sold it about a month ago. It sat here for almost two years then suddenly someone needed it!

Did you get it with the left side all torn down or was there a problem discovered with the left side covers? I assume chain slap and damage as thats the most common. I do know a guy that has some 125M stuff, i will give him a call here in just a bit. He had a complete bottom end as a spare, he might still have it, although its been a half year since i talked to him last but doesn't hurt to ask.

I will do some digging and let you know this evening if i can come up with anything through guys i know.

Oh boy the addiction has started!!! LOL

Thanks for spotting that auction....I went ahead and bought it, had watched that one last week b/c it was the best price I saw on those two parts and regretted letting it slip by( auction ended so they must have relisted). Shipping pretty steep at 17.45 so still 46.00 in so far. And still more parts to go, lol. Cheapest I've seen on ebay for the sub transmission so far was 100.00. I do appreciate you making part inquiries to help me out....THANKS!
Kb, the cover was in place on the motor but broken around the sprocket, so you might be right on the chain slap....I'll post a pic tomorrow so you can see the broken part. The outer cover was intact but I needed another for my other 125 which has a cracked one (which potentially allows water in) so I wanted to replace it.

Yep i am betting chain slap, only reason it would be damaged in that location. Glad i could help!

Tried calling, got his voicemail, left a message. I know he has some 125M parts just a hard guy to get a hold of!!

The sub-trans and recoil are going to be the most expensive thats for sure. The recoils show up on ebay but always seem to bring a lot of money. I saw one sub-trans on there for around $70 but thats the cheapest i have seen.

What was wrong with the sub-trans on yours?

The sub trans was missing in action. In as purchased condition, someone had made an attempt at fixing, the bolts were loose on the left engine cover and spacer. The recoil was missing and the sub trans was missing. When I bought the trike, my original intent was to use it for parts for my running one. I had no experience working on them either and didn't even know the trans was missing, lol. If I had it to do over again, I would look harder to find one in running or close to running condition to work on. I only paid 50.00 in the first place, and as i got to looking closer at it realized its in better shape in some ways than my running 84',,,so i decided it would be a shame to just tear it all down in to parts if i can help it. now I'm sorta into the challenge and fun of rescuing a 'goner'.

Here is the broken left engine cover spacer (in the sprocket housing area). Another little bit of tidbit of info, the chain has a bad kink where the link bound up, so I bet you are totally correct about the chain jumping the sprocket causing the failure...

Heck if you only got $50 into buying it putting a couple hundred into it is well worth it if you ask me. You still come out ahead and have the satisfaction of bringing it back yourself!

Wow that is the worst left side damage i have seen on a 125, a whole piece is gone!!! That must have been brutal when it happened. Definitely get a new chain and unless the sprockets are still nice i would replace them too. Generally what happens is you get too much chain slack and eventually end up with a broken chain that gets wadded up around the front sprocket when your moving along at a good clip and bammmmm...

The 125M doesn't have an idler (as i am sure you know now) like the 90/110's so ya gotta check the chain and tension on them by pulling the plug or the chain cover. I would have preferred if they kept the idler on them, a lot easier to maintain, just loosen the nut for the adjuster and move it and feel the chain slack come out. The 125M has been a pain for me adjusting the chain, usually something is stuck, rusted, etc. I had one i had to take the entire rear end apart to get the carrier moving again to adjust the chain.

Anyway i think you did alright only spending $50 to get it. Lots of wiggle room for repair. I see a few recoils on ebay for the $30-$50 range depending on condition. I'm still hoping to get a hold of a guy that i know has some parts. I bet he has a sub transmission complete.

Cross recoil off the list...Came through another ebay auction. Sub trans and the air cleaner tube are the next targets.

I had a waiting message when i got home just a bit ago... No luck on the sub trans, he has the bottom end off a 125M but the sub trans was already scavenged off of it. He doesn't have anything else left...

I saw one of the intake tubes for like $20 on eBay. Looks like eBay is going to be your best bet to piece it back together. Those complete sub-trans listed on there are spendy though.

HondaGuy (forum member) tells me he has the sub trans and some other misc goodies I need, so fingers crossed that it all works out

Kb, by the way, thanks alot for making those calls on my behalf looking for parts. I got quite a few on ebay so far,,,,still looking for the sub trans.

Havn't been able to work on the 125 for a few days....but today I made the clutch removal tool (thanks to Eric the Redneck's vids on youtube showing the basic idea). I used a socket because I had a cheap laying around loose. It turned out quite well, took me about 15 minutes with the dremel tool and the clutch nut came off no trouble. Here's a couple pics of the clutch nut socket I made in case any other first timers need the visual aid:

I cut out the waste between the four prongs in small sections to make it easier to get them out.

Now that the clutch and primary driven gear are removed, I'm inspecting the gear shifting. It is only shifting into neutral and two gears. I removed the gear shift drum stopper and the gear shift spindle and drum stopper plate....thought the gear shift drum would spin around at that point but it won't. Do I need to worry about this? Seems like I read another post somewhere that the trike has to be running and driving to sorta nudge into the next gear? Or is this one those problems I will have to split the case about? (I hope not).

I also can't find what the service manual calls the "oil pass pipe and spring", should have been found on clutch removal....grrr, I think someone has taken this apart before and forgot a part here and there

(edit 9/3/13) Today I was exploring this shifting issue a little further and found another broken part. It's a pin on one end, the other end is threaded and bolts into the right crank case but the bolt is broken off in the case. Guess I might as well end this thread here and start using the new member 'Discussion Forum' and post pictures of it....getting a little deeper into questions beyond new member 'Commencement', lol.

Good job on making the socket!!

And yes i commented on your other post, its normal regarding the gear shifting, as i mentioned over there. I forgot you hadn't had this running yet when i commented on that post.

That oil pass pipe and spring sit inside the triangular shaped pieces, its just what looks like a little piece of tubing with a spring in it. It is essential for proper oil flow. So add it to your parts scrounge list!
