1985 atc250sx gas cap

I just picked up a 1985 Honda atc250sx this weekend. The gas cap vent lever is broke off. Are the caps of the different Honda atc's fairly universal size?

I always thought the vented gas caps were the same. What's different on them? Just size?
Because even my 200s has one. I just thought the only ones that were different were like the 200x's with the breather tube caps.

As long as it broke in the open position I think you'll be fine for now. Because if its off I'm sure you already know that it creates a vacuum and that means no gas to carb.

You may be right to some extent on that Ghost but not all caps will fit or seal that way they are supposed to. I have tried a couple different caps on SX tanks and the opening was different.

Probably others too, but that is all I am 100 % sure about.

You can still buy them new from Honda (using your favorite on-line parts retailer). I ordered and received mine last year and externally, it appears identical to the original.

The parts catalogs on-line do show that the original cap has been replaced by a substitute part though (gascap currently called out for 250SX is: 17620-HC3-505). Just for kicks, I did the reverse part number search and it comes up as the TRX300 gascap (from 1996-2000).

And for what its worth: this same part number shows up as the replacement cap for just about all the machines that use that style cap (the big black cap with vent knob on top). I know that the new replacement cap I got fits both my 86 250SX and my 84 Big Red (200ES).

Plus the ATC200 series(except 200x) the 185 and my Fourtrax 300 4X4 also..OEM part number crosses over on the parts lookups for all of them.

Pretty standard Honda cap..
