How much faster are the water cooled (85/85) atc's compared to an air cooled (83/84) atc?
I know the air cooled atc's are 5speed, water cooled are 6 speed, but overall top speed and accelration, will the water cooled kill the earlier models?

1983-84 250r I think does 65mph and 85-86 250r does 76mph stock
83/84 does 50-55 stock, a 85/86 does 70 stock
Give me no lip and I tell you no lie.

[20:55] <waterpumper> putting a racing pipe on a Foreman is like putting a high dollar bikini on a 400 pound chick...just because it fits doesn't mean it looks cool
My 83 might do 40, but it sure gets there quick!Originally Posted by 85ATC250R

wow i did not know the air cooled are that slow.... Whats the speed of a 81-82 R ?? So if the 83-84 are that slow my DR can beat them in top speed not acceleration right....

I ran my stock 83R along side a car to determine top speed.
60 mph with the stock rear tires.
My stock 85R does 70 to 72 depending on which car.

You can always gear the bike up for a higher top speed (as long as you have enough motor to pull it).

I am always flabergasted at why top speed is so important to everybody. Quickness is the real measure of how "fast" something is, not the top miles per hour it can attain. In the real world, how often do you ever really have a need or reason to go as fast as it can go?. Take in any bracket racing night at your local race track and you'll know what I'm talking about. Maybe I'm biased because I don't live anywhere near the Bonneville salt flats and because of the fairly tight woods type riding I do, but it just isnt that important my rides top speeds. I'm not saying I'd be happy with an 18" tired 250R, stock geared ATC250R's 30mph top speed either - but 65mph, 75mph - whats the real difference when in the real world of ATVing, you never get there anyway. I sometimes think alot of you guys have forgotten how to carve a turn.

Actually I got caught up in a similar situation regarding horsepower. I USED to think that because I am such a big guy I needed a bike with a whole lot of HP just to keep me satisfied. Truth be told, not even a KX500 could keep me really happy for long. However, give me a good trike that can plonk along at 35-45 mph and I would be happy with that. Wickedfinger is right. How often can you use 76 mph on a trike anyway. Now if it got there in 3.5 seconds that would be something.
