Is one just a retaining ring for the seal?

    Did ya take it apart?

Your springs could also be getting weak.

replace 7 and 8 with new clean the exhaust flange and pipe spotless to bare metal then use permatex high temp silicon the orange not red. I got this from the ct racing website and worked great for me.

Sometimes 2 strokes just puff smoke out of the head. Out of all the 2 strokes I've owned only a couple would seal up with just oem stuff. To really seal it up you need good springs and some sealant like rtv. High temp stuff.

Pipes get worn from the vibrations over time too. I've taken off pipes that the cuff was oval instead of round. Also. Aftermarket pipes don't always fit like oem. The thing I love about the 250r is the flange is replaceable. The 250rs always seem to seal up pretty nice.

oil splooge is a given, especially if you are going to run higher oil concentrations; e.g. 36:1 and below. One thing I have been looking at getting and have heard great things from other people is this billet exhaust flange from ESR (I have been told it effectively eliminates the splooge factor). Link Below.

I put brand new ring, and brand new gasket in my stock flange. Aftermarket pipe, doesn't leak the tiniest bit of smoke or splooge. However, if it was leaking, I would use the orange sealant poohbee suggested.
