225 dx wont start with electric start

i picked up an 85 225dx that im restoring,...can anyone point me in a direction ?....bike starts right up with pull start, but WILL NOT with electric start.,the engine turns over no problem,and theres spark at the plug........i tested starter with a battery charger as i didnt have a battery laying around to use,....it started right up ONCE, then wouldnt fire again ,.....i probably toasted something by using a charger to test it????? maybe the starting circuit cutoff relay ? ?,.....when this relay is functioning, what EXACTLY does it do ?.......any advise is REALLY APPRECIATED !.................THANX guys

I have seen a couple other threads related to this problem..seems to come up from time to time on the Yamaha trikes.

Done recall the suggestions to fix..try a search in the Trikesylvania section!

I had almost the same exact problem on my 225dx. The bike would fire right up with the pull start. My mom spent $60 on a brand new battery for it (Its my brothers bike), charged it fully, put it on and the starter motor itself did what it was suppose to do. It turned the motor over but would not start up. I put my hand over the exhaust and air was coming out. No idea as to why it would not start up. Maybe because it was low on compression but who knows. Im rebuilding it now. My winter project.
