is the axle bent too? If not, then the bearing surface wear may be fixable. I had an 86 X that was exactly the same way (bearings so bad they chewed into the axle about 1/32" all the way around. It took time & effort, but my dad and I were able to put a MIG weld around the chewed surface then lathe it down (axle HAS to be 100% straight for this to work) to where it needed to go. it was more work than buying a $100+ axle on ebay, but was worth it for saving the money...

I think I might just try doing a little welding, then just buzz it down with the grinder a bit until I get a snug fit, won't be perfect, but it should be close enough.
