Carb help - es - sx

I have a big red 250es that i got over the weekend, i noticed that the choke cable was broken off, it ran ,but kinda acted like carb needed a little help. I figured id just take the choke cable from the sx thats still getting work on, for the time being. 85sx , 85es ... I figured same year , same carb. If they are supposed to the same, someone changed one of them at some time, cause they are quite different. And of course the choke cable, and needle and do not fit. So i need to get one, and i need to know what carb i have so that i can order the right one. And not another one for the sx. The ones i seen on ebay kinda looked like the bigger one, that is in my sx carb. Someone please help me id these carbs, so i can get the right parts

    Attachment 179837Attachment 179838Attachment 179839Attachment 179840

the one on the right , with the flat top is the one that came off the es.

Also on the sx one , what is thet push , pull knob on the bottom??? And if it has a crack in the little rubber boot , will that let unwanted air in there or is just to shield off any dirt?

Tried just swapping carbs , but the sx one needs help too, i make the exhaust really hot. Guess im going to see if i can send it to carb pro up in chocktaw, flyingw.

If anyone has a complete choke, ( cable and needle ant plastic part that screws in the carb) laying around that they arent using, i would be interested , if not , off to ebay i go

    thanks for any help

That left carb looks very much like the one on my 1990 TRX300FW quad..right one looks stock to the ES/SX, 86 is my guess judging by the extra vent hosing.

Thanks trizilla... I had read that ,i did go back and reread though to see if i missed the part where i could tell these two apart. All i see iare pics that look the one on the right.

I was thinking one might be an 85 and one an 86 or something, but now i guess i need to see if off a trx300fw now ,thanks for the help

that could explain wht the different size choke holes, maybe

so are all the choke holes the same size on the sx , es carbs? Or do they change with the year

In the first pic, I see its an 01A (85 ES) carb if my eyes are correct but it has the 86/87 vent hose configuration. The choke valve for ES/SX all years is interchangeable but the other carb is different as far as the choke valve goes.

I have extra choke valves so if you want to send me your carbs for rebuild, I will return them rebuilt with a choke valve. You can call me anytime at 405.420.1114. Jim

Im pretty sure thats what it says too. Hows it going to be an 85 with a 86-87 hose configuration? Isnt there different holes? Or did i make that up?

Then there is your other option..FlyingW carb fixes all your issues!!

I have 4 machines with the 250cc power plant..I currently am running one of Jim's carbs and love it. He's rebuilding a second for my as we speak..

Over the winter I'll likely get the other 2 done..then they will all run AWESOME!!

Pack up your carb and it to him..then when the box shows up reinstall and fire it up!! No brainer!

The TRX carb is not a good carb for the ES/SX. Different flow characteristics make it a bad candidate without having to completely rejet it. The 350X carb is a proven upgrade for the ES/SX motors but it too requires rejetting. The 350X carb is the same QA series carbs and it can be used with the stock choke cable configuration. I test the 350X carbs I rebuild on my SX. The vent hoses don't matter. When I rebuild my carbs, I setup the vent hoses in the 85 configuration i.e. 2 simple hoses rather than that spaghetti mess the 86/87 carbs came with.

Marginal in my opinion but then again, I've never committed a 350X carb long term. I will do this in the next week and report back.
