82 185S Troubleshooting No Spark
I recently purchased the 82 185s from a friend. It ran very badly due to carb problems, cracked spark plug wire and a fouled old plug. I replaced the carb and it idled perfectly and ran well enough to get me home. The following morning after a freeze and snow, it would not start at all due to no spark. So I then replaced the coil with wire and a new plug and still have no spark. I tested it with a known working cdi and had no spark. Everything seems like it should work or in good condition except I did find water in the pull start housing as the previous owner plugged the drain hole. I dried it out with a rag but still no spark. Any suggestions? Thanks! P.S. It was running and killed with the switch prior to this problem.

sounds like stator its behind the flywheel under the recoil you will need a flywheel puller off ebay to get access to it the water in the recoil probably killed it. it could also be rusted from the water ide pull the flywheel and check out the stator and the flywheel try cleaning them and try it again if it dosent work pickup a new stator

Take the switch apart and see if there aren't small inhabitants residing in the housing. I see contact issues all the time on street bikes when they use the kill switch. This is the first and easiest check you can do without special tools.

Thank you both for the time and advice. I did bypass the kill switch but still no spark. I'm going to do a test on the wiring and if that doesn't fix it, looks like a new stator is in order. UPDATE: Turns out my kill switch was grounded. Found my spark...
