Insuring a three wheeler in Ontario?

Hey everyone, I just picked up an 85 250SX and am looking to insure it so I can ride it on the trails around here. I've read a few posts saying that State Farm will insure them for less than $200. This is my first vehicle so I'm not sure the route to go and I'm a little confused about it. I read on a government website that you needed insurance before getting a plate, but the guy I bought it from, along with a few other people I've talked to say that they got the plate from the MTO without insurance. Also I'd like to know if anybody who has there three wheelers insure actually told the agent that it was a trike, or if they went through it saying ATV, I imagine that would be the way to go, but if they ask if it's a four wheeler and I say yes can I get in trouble later? I'm imaging so. Any information would be great. Thanks.

An offroad vehicle doesn't require you to have insurance in order to plate in Ontario. I have many plated trikes, but only one with insurance just so I can carry a pink slip with me when I ride.

You do need a valid drivers license of course..

Then the person handling your registration didn't know their own rules..offroad vehicle and snowmobiles don't require insurance to register and plate in Ontario.

Only time I've ever been asked for my proof of insurance was when I wanted to get a trail pass or day permit on the trail systems in northern ontario.

Just vehicles liceneed for the road..

    What's with all the commas??

Wish Alberta was like Ontario. We need minimum pl,pd on insurance and a plate just to ride on public land.

Anyone know if they will insure them in NY? I have a friend who was an agent but haven't seen them lately to ask.

Never asked but chances are slim..check your local insurance market.

Hey everyone, thanks for the information. I contacted Nicole and I'll be on the trails by Monday! She said I do not require license, as long as there is a licensed person in my household eligible for ATV insurance, AKA my father. I can't wait.

$6! Come on Jason, typo? I pay $360/year for one BR, not through State Farm though. They want me to switch everything over to them to be able to insure my ATV/C's. And I had to send them a couple of pics of the BR to prove the shape it's in.

I just had to make a quick call and send the information online, she said the offices are closed all weekend, so the application won't go through till Monday. They didn't ask for pictures or any information other than the VIN/Licence/Payment info. I was quoted at $128 for the year, so that's less than $11 a month.
