Electric starter question

So im also messing with my starter on the ytm 225 and i got the starter to turn the motor over but it wont start. It coughs out the carb but no start ! It will pull start though.
What i did to get the starter to turn the motor over was take the starter wire off the solenoid and touched to the positive terminal on the battery. Was this why it turned over yet wouldn't start? I have a new 3 function switch coming soon, hopefully it will solve this issue!

I had the same problem. Would turn over the engine, but would not start it. Same model. Would pull start fine though. I thought it was because I needed a top end rebuild. Smoked like crazy. Then the starter clutch or something broke and the electric starter wouldn't disengage. So I had to pull the whole motor.

did you fix it? i figure that its not turning the motor fast enough but its gotta be turning it faster than I can by hand! lol i should have the new start button / headlight / on off switch tomorrow so hopefully it will start with a push of a button now...lol

Nope lol, engine is still on the work bench. Im fairly new to motors so i am hesitant to crack it open with no help or direction. Plus i got other running trikes and all winter to finish it.
But anyways, thats what i thought too, but it was literally a brand new battery fully charged. It should work. I thought it was something electrical. They were kinda a mess on that bike. Even when i turned on the lights it would kill the engine.

ok guys here is an option for you to look at when you go into your motors, I also had this issue with my 225 and discovered what it is. When I got mine the oil drain plug was seized into the case I have since fixed that, but I had no idea when the oil was last changed when I got it, so drained the oil from the oil filter area. However the drain screen will catch debris and you won't be able to clean it till the drain bolt is freed. all these small high performance motors eventually wear out parts and in the process leave behind metal debris which get thrown up into the stator area especially if the oil is not changed regularly. I have spark with my electric starter, but it is not as strong as with the pull start, because my stator has damaged areas on it from debris. I have a spare stator and alternator, just haven't changed it yet so if you go into your motors check that out and you may find that is your issue keeping the electric start from making it run. In the summer when the motor is nice and hot my electric start will make it run but if the motor cools off too much it just cranks but no fire.
And czac either your solenoid is bad or if you would like send me your ignition switch and I will rebuild it for you if you pay shipping both ways.
And Ghostv2 let me look through my parts bucket I am pretty sure I have the starter gears for you as you should only have to pull the pull start and stator cover off to get to them.

Thanks for the Offer Brandon but I got my starter switch in last night and put it on and she fired right up. Of course I had to disassemble the switch and clean off all the contacts first but the start button works as do the head lights and kill switch now. So much nicer to hit a button than to pull that rope! lol
Funny you mention the oil drain plug being frozen, mine is... whats the trick to getting it unstuck? heating it with a torch or heat gun?
