Help identifying some Yamha trikes and a 4 wheeler I picked up

I picked up two Yamaha 3 wheelers and a Yamaha 4 wheeler yesterday and I need help identifying them.

Is there a common place on their frames that I can find the VIN numbers or serial numbers and is there a source on the web that has a VIN decoder?

I'm really not sure what I have, they are all Yamaha's, one of the trikes is 200 cc 4 stroke, yellow plastic and is mostly complete but has little or no compression non running . The second trike is black plastic 225 with reverse and rear suspension missing it's top engine part. Both the trikes are shaft drive. The 4 wheeler is supposedly a 200 cc shaft drive, it's mostly a frame and rearend with no plastic parts.

I bought these for parts and possibly restoring one or more, I needed some parts for my existing YTM200EK, they came partly disassembled with several boxes, buckets and stacks of parts. The prior owner attempted to do some engine swapping and I guess got in over his head then gave up. I anticipate that I'm going to keep what I need and may end up eBay'ing the rest of the parts but right now I more overcome with all that I suddenly have and want to identify what I have first before I do anything.

I think I got a good deal, I paid $300 for these and there are several new Yamaha parts such as key ignitions, top end gasket set and just so much more that I can't describe all of it!

Black plastic with gold wheels and reverse is a yammi 225dr......the other more than likely is a ytm200 yammi....

Vin should be on the frame's neck, google Yamaha VIN lookup. Some of the older Yamaha vins were shorter then today's standard... I remember having to try a few of the google results before I found one that work for the short vins (which is why I didn't give a link).

The cylinder size should be stamped into the side by the base. Also the 200's had no suspension and a single downtube in the front. 225's had rear suspension and a double downtube.

And also, the vin number can be found on the top of the engine case too, on a little flat area behind the cylinder near the breather tube.

Best I can tell one is a 84 YTM200 which makes it a YTM200EL since it has electric start, the black one I believe is a YTM225DRN which I like but the PO really messed it up, he took the entire engine apart to fix the YTM200EL only to find that the engine was different so it appears he let it sit, he took the YFM200 4 wheeler and made it work in the YTM200EL only to find that it had hardly no compression. I haven't had to chance to confirm it.

I have been going though the boxes & buckets of parts I have for them, I doubt that I will be able to get the 225 going which is a shame as other than the engine apart, it's a complete trike. The YTM200EL is complete short of a carb but it at least needs the topend rebuilt.



This is the one I like but I'm afraid it might be a basket case, it has some odd brackets above the headlight and on the rear bar along with a a bracket on the lower front left wheel hub, some kind of prefab of some type. The bracket above the head light has a label "Cambridge Metal & Plastic" which that company does custom metal frabrication. Not sure what's up with the Suzuki seat but it to fit and latch?


The YTM200EL is hopefull but I already have a YTM200EK so I suspect I may just try to sell it outright and let someone else get it running. This is the one that the prior owner took apart only to find it wouldn't work in his other trike. The tub and buckets of parts I have go to this one.


The YFM200 lower engine is there and I have the front hub and all the wheels to it but no plastic, prior owner took the head off the this and put it on the YTM200EL and found it had no compression.


So tell me, what would YOU do if you had these?? I'm stuck between fixing them or parting them out on eBay. I need a couple electrical parts for my YTM200EK like a regulator and lighting coil, so far the two regulators I have tested are as bad as the one I already have and the lighting coil of the 225 appears bad as it's not within the spec ohm range. there is a brand new Yamaha key switch on one and a couple Yamaha gasket sets, can't say I didn't do too bad I paid $300 for everything so I not sure if I did good or not as this was somewhat of a impulse buy.

I'd mess around with the yellow one and part everything else. You can find a 225dx in decent condition for much cheaper than what you will put into that.

Nice buy. I saw you were curious about the metal brackets, I don't know specifically what they are for but Cambridge Metal & Plastic did make ATV/ATC racks at one point so that might be what those are from. The seat on the 225 looks like the correct seat, someone probably just used another cover they had.

I suspect I'm going to part these out, there is something wrong with the transmission on the YTM200 as when I try to shift it to neutral, all I hear/feel is a detached "clunk" and it won't move out of gear. I wish I knew more of the history of these as I would like the 225 since it has reverse (I'm a disabled guy and reverse would be nice).

At this point I believe I going to part these out and save the proceeds to put towards a better trike and to fix up the one I have running (a YTM200EK).

Does anyone have any advice on how to test the CDI modules on these? I have complete wiring for all three of these and the CDI units appear to valuable if they are good. The manual refers to the idea that they can only be tested by Yamaha service and as they are supectable to damage if hooked up incorrectly I don't want to do something stupid and damage a good one!

Well here you go, drop me a pm, I'm sure it wouldn't cost much to ship it north, LOL!

I do have the lower part of the engine including the head. If I was to restore any of them, this one would be the best choice. It might cost me more than its worth as while the tires are holding air they are in bad shape. I suspect it would be a major money black hole.

I'm sure you have enough parts there to build a good frankentrike lol. Someone else posted a thread where they put their 225 engine in a 200 and a timberwolf 250 engine in their 225. I believe it was a direct swap, some of the quad drive shafts won't line up on the trikes (I think they are more centered) but that quad looks offset.

As for testing a CDI, I believe the recommended way is to put it on one where everything else works. If you have another running 200e you can just plug your spare CDI in and see if it fires up. But from what I understand you'll need the 225 stator and coil to test the 225's CDI.

it's too bad you live so far away from me, I would show you where everything went for that 225 and even have a bunch of spare parts for it as well. I could prolly make 2 good running trikes out of all that, but alas I am so far away.
