I always thought porting had to be done in a machine shop with special tools?

Yeah, I always heard something about a 'flow bench'. and saw lots of simple 'polish' jobs.
    to remove casting ridges.
Wish I knew, maybe we'll find out with this thread.

Spring 1980 edition of 3 Wheeling magazine had a very extensive article titled Modifying The ATC Head For Power And Performance which detailed head porting. Showed 3D molds of stock ports vs modified ports. Great article. Maybe someone has it scanned.

What do you have for tools? If you are just looking to clean up the casting flash and polish the exhaust port you can do it with a 1/8" Dremel (1/4" drive is better), but If you are planning to alter the power band you might want to pass the head on to a pro. There is also a company called Extrude Hone. http://extrudehoneafm.com/ I don't know if they have a fixture for your head, but their method is very effective. Depending on how wild you want to get, a professional hand port followed up by the Extrude Hone process is as good as it gets.

i have a good dremel and lots of bits. the dratv cam is just a longer duration cam no real extra lift . so im not wanting to go to wild i guess. im a pretty handy guy soi figure with a lil instruction i can get some more power out of the head. i just dont wana make any mistakes or think that"hey i got a dremel ,lets just grind away ". there is one thread i found that has a good explanation but no pics or a real"how to" to it. thanks for any help guys.

ok look, if you do not know what you are doing do NOT port the channels. only "port match the end no more than 1" into the chamber of the port. port matching is matching the ports to the gasket on and intake as well as the exhaust side. anything more and you will most likely cause performance loss. you have to have a flow bench to properly port a hear and test to ensure it was done right and where to shape material from. a couple of guys on here can do an "ok" jobs as they built lots of race machines over the years and know what to touch, but as a novice, do not do it. just match the ports and leave it.

you will need to get the right bits to work on alloy and they are typically 1/4" shanked pieces so you need a die grinder to work with them.
