Yes, you can drop an 86 motor in to an 85 chassis and visa versa.

    Nothing and yes..

Minor engineering changes with stator and carb, but nothing you need to concern with..pop it in!

It is a tricky bit of geometry to get in and out if you haven't done before...
    Current toys..
    1986 Honda 350X..trail bomb!
    1985 Honda 250SX..my main mudder
1985 Honda 250ES..Back in Black Trike
    Current non-trike toys:
    1990 Honda TRX300FW
    1995 Seadoo GTX
1998 Polaris Indy Lite 340(Nearly new looking)
    1998 Polaris Touring 500
    1998 Club Car (electric)

Actually some of the first 250cc engines had a weak crank on the right side. I have had 3-4 of them that the centrifical clutch end of the crank broke and took out the side cases and other stuff.
As far as fitment though the motors swap out with no problem.

Also a 250sx engine fits flawlessly. I had an 85 and started getting a knock so went and bought a 250sx and swapped engines in a couple hours. The only difference (one that I like a lot) is the 250sx engine is black. I think it looks tough in the big red. just personal opinion though.
