    Modifed Mini-class Racer

    Great site.

I grew up racing on the East Coast. First a stock ATC 70, then a fully suspended A+ Industries framed PowerRoll-build "70cc" monster, and lastly a Honda CR60 converted to a 3-wheeler that would outrun a stock 200X. I was a lucky kid with lots of great memories of my own races and riding trails around the N.E.

I also witnessed Pro racers such Marty Hart & Jimmy White battle, Sparks and Dunlap thrash 4 strokes, Jackie Meadows mop up, Rodney Gentry's Cagivia days & Honda factory ride. (Steve Wright, Steve Mendanhall, Mike Coe, Greg Baker, Timmy Helter, and Gary Denton as well).

...When those goofy 4 wheelers took over, the Pros finished their careers on 4 wheels. I threw my leg over a dirt bike and rolled the 3 wheelers into the shop.

Pictures on the way when I get them scanned.

Wow! The last time I saw and spoke with Mr. Mickey Dunlap was as a 11 year old kid at the Columbus Fair Grounds Nationals.

I think Mickey and a teammate were on white/red/blue 200Xs. Mickey was sitting on his bike before or after a heat or moto. Focused they were, so a lot of chit chat wasn't had. I cant forget how Mickey and the other Pros rolled this long left-hand sweeper to the front stretch full slide & pulling a wheelie leaving only ONE real wheel on the turf!! Seeing Marty Hart doing this was a sight! Also Curtis Sparks got caught playing possum, starting is bike last second, rolling the start, then being relegated to the rear row for a restart.

Today I still have a few ATC 70's and the CR60 after 26 years. The A+ trike was sold the fund the CR60. The 70 was a pretty machine with a PowerRoll built 108cc stoker with a compression that tore the calluses off my old man's when he pull started it. I may have the P.O. of the build of the 70 at PowerRoll. I believe my Dad actually spoke to Mickey, and Mickey built the monster motor because it was a clutched CL or SL 70.

Last Fall a buddy held a mini-bike go-cart rally at his house. So, I thrashed to put my old stock 70 donor bike back running to "race" again. The axles, intake, air cleaner, bars, risers, etc. were all part of the A+ build back in '85! I scored a junk yard ATC 70 and a 4trax to get the old machine back up and running. I even took my old number plate from back in the day and tie strapped it in place!! The ol gal whooped the others once again:

I raced mostly in NYS: Lebanon Valley, County Line Raceway, Lake George (Ice Racing), Fonda Speedway, Dodgeville, Electric City,... then we ventured South to NC, TN, PA, WV, etc. for National events put on my the AATVA from 85-87ish. Southwick 338 was the best track and Loretta Lynn's was GNALY! I now live in Middle TN, far away from old man winter : )

    Mickey,
True. These young whip'r snappers these days haha.

I see you are very active on the site, and that's really exciting for an old "kid" like me. I look forward to reading and posts on how you Pros did it all. As a kid, my perspective isn't 100% accurate but my memory is pretty decent. I totally was captivated by the 3-wheeler pros, reading the mags, racing, etc. You guys had the cool factor nailed and emulating your riding style, parts, was what all aspiring racers desperately wanted to master.

It still blows my mind all these years later how some of you guys would sell the race motors right out of your bikes after mopping up the very competitors you just beat. Then made a gentleman agreement to re-ring, etc., as the motor got used up in ensuing races.

    Good times!
