1986 atc 250r questions

So i picked up this pretty nice 250r this weekend that had the motor completely gone through and they couldn't figure out was was wrong with it. I spent all day sunday going through and checking things and found that the flywheel key was missing so i put one in and runs great but as soon as i put it into gear it goes backwards so i really just don't know what to think about the hole deal. So my question is can the gear just be put on backwards.I ask this because i have ran into someone putting in the gears wrong for the decomp lever on a 350x and it would push the cable instead of pulling.

Do you mean the bike goes backward?

Yes the bike has reverse i know it sounds f-ed up and yes i do know my 3 wheelers very well i have 3 250r in the garage but this will be a first for me.

It soulds to me like your engine might be running backwards.

Check the timing with a timing lite to insure it is firing BEFORE top dead center or buy a cheap tdc gauge and check it with that.

When i put it into second it will go forward I just decided probably best to just tear it down and start over if it's doing this who know's what else they might have screwed up.

If you have it too far advanced it will run backwards. Kicker is turning it the right way but soon as the crank rotation slows down the ignition kicks it in reverse.
You'll need to find TDC, then mark the flywheel for TDC & then set the ignition stator to the proper place. Once you have done that, you need a timing light to to set the ignition to the proper degree advance.

def flywheel/cdi/stator issue. never personally had that happen but im 99% sure that means the motor is running backwards for the the tranny to run backwards.

Well i would like to thank everyone for the help it was a junk rick's stator put the old one back in and runs like a champ. I'm glad the guy i got it from gave me all the old parts
with it.
