    need help 250 big red?

Hello everyone, i have recently purchased a new stator for my 1986 250 big red because the battery wasnt recharging and I tested the wires and they were all a fail.anyways I pulled off the stator cover to day to find a groove in the magneto and the stator bet up. So my question is what has caused this. My dad thinks it could be the crank a little warped or a bad bearing. If anyone has an idea of what it could be please respond.thank you everyone for reading!!!

I am more familiar with the 250sx's but they are the same beasts. Honda used 2 different stators over the years in these bikes. the stator and the flywheel need to be the same type for it to work. I do not know if mismatching will cause them to rub but it might be your issue. also make sure the stator is seated properly as well as the fly wheel. the flywheel sits on a taper on the crank. if not seated properly it could wobble as it spins.

    whoa!
groove in the mag and stator bit up / chewed?

Almost sounds like a small piece of metal may have been picked up by the mag and spun around the stator? errant washer? Metal debris?
Did the oil look like sparkle soup?

Any up/down play in the crank?
    Bent?
Someone had a way to spin these engines with a drill, sparkplug out, of course.
or plug out and rotate slowly by hand and see if it has a wobble.
Might need a wire or indicator of some kind, maybe glob of playdoh to see if it mashes it?

So? the stator ohms bad now?

I'm with 'tri again' likely a piece of debris inside the engine..perhaps pieces of starter drive or shifter pin from a previous failure/repair. Neither are uncommon on that engine..and both would happen in the same area as your stator.

A bad bearing would most certainly cause a vibration and some pretty serious noise if that were the case.

Look in the oil jacket at the bottom of the engine for any chunks that might be floating around in the sump area while you have the side cover off..

Then buy a replacement stator and put it back together.
