83 83 and 84 250r's pics added

I was looking to trade my ar-15 and a handgun for a 250r. Well I just traded for a complete 83 and 84 and a 83 250r Thats in pieces. The motor on the piece bike is bored to 310 but no piston. The other two have been sitting for two years with old gas in them and not running too good. The 84 needs a new head gasket and clutch cable which I have. Are they hard to replace? Ill try to post pics later so just

Head gaskets are super easy to replace on 2 strokes, even on 4 strokes. Clutch cable is also easily replaced. I Don't remember if you have to yank the motor from the frame to pull the head.

simple as hell

i have an 83. The clutch cable will be simple to replace. you will have to pull the clutch arm if you currently dont have a cable by hand somehow. easiest way ive found is lock onto it GOOD with a vice grips and twist it. then you can slip the cable end in. done.

head takes a bit more but is super damn simple as well. first remove the seat, turn off the gas, remove the fuel lines and then the tank. Then remove the exhaust. unplug the spark plug and start taking off the nuts. DONE. there is plenty of room to take the head off in the frame. make sure you torque the new head gasket down correctly!

The clutch cable is done and it was way easy. The 83 runs but like garbage. It was smoking bad and if i gave it gas it put out whitish smoke? Is that from the horrible apple juice gas it has in it? It was also sputtering oily gas stuff from around the exhaust. The 84 motor kicks but doesnt fire. I didnt mess with the carb or spark, just a quick mess around with it. I really want to get the 84 going its in really good shape except for the brakes seem a little messed up. Oh well. Itll be fun to fix these up and ride

Before I even try to start machines that have been sitting, I always pull the tank, dump that junky gas out, put new gas in it and rinse it out and dump it again. Pull that carb off, tear it apart and clean it out good, with carb cleaner and compressed air, reassemble. Pull the air filter off and clean it real well (oil it if its a foam filter). Make sure all the air cleaner boots don't have mouse nest or anything blocking it. Get a new spark plug. Put everything back on it and THEN see how it runs. Make sure to get good fresh gas and get some high quality 2 stroke oil (I run Klotz benol) and mix about 32:1 for now until you find out what its jetted for. Also dump that tranny oil. Get some fresh oil that says wet clutch approved on it. I run amsoil 10W-40 transmission oil in my 250r's.

Try everything above and see how it runs.

Also, when you have the carb apart, note down the main jet size, pilot jet size, and what the needle is set at. We can help jet it for you if it's not yet jetted correctly, and then it will give you an idea of what pre-mix ratio you should run.

Tonight i figured was just to try and se what ive actually got. And the guy already ran it so i figured the harm was already done on running junk gas. I have never owned a 2 stroke so its a whole new world. The parts bike had a rebuilt carb in the pile. I pulled it apart and took a look, looks nice and clean. Tomorrow im getting oil and gas and will see how it goes. Does the white smoke seem like a gas issue? Ive only seen white smoke when a head gasket goes out but thats on cars wheb the antifreeze gets in the engine. Thamks again for the help.

If its the headgasket I would think you would have some oily stuff oozing out around the head and cylinder, and it will run lean if the headgasket is bad. The white smoke could also be it having a bad crank seal and sucking in some tranny oil and burning that. But see what color it is when you get the airfilter, carb, and new gas in it.

Nice score the rear fenders on the trike in the bottom pic are low profile fenders.Do you have pics of the 310 cylinder.

This is where its leaking by the exhaust. And now that its good gas it has no white but still smokes. It is a bluish smoke. Seems like a ring is bad and leaking by. I have no clue.

Much more progress today. On the 84 that didnt run dumped the mtn. Dew colored gas out. Cleaned the carb out good. Fresh gas and cleaned the plug she fired right up. Runs a little rough. But its running.

2 strokes are supposed to smoke blue to a point. What 2 stroke oil are you using in the gas? and what ratio are you mixing it at?

The only kind the shop had was yamamoto or something like that. If i did it right it was 40:1according to the bottle. 5 gallons of gas to one 16oz bottle.

that exhaust leak is common. there is a STUPID ring thats supposed to seal in there. simple fix is to remove the pipe. make sure the exhaust flange is still good and the ring is still on it. clean the flange, the rings groove, the ring, and the mating surface inside the pipe reeaaaalllllly good. Then put a nice coat of black rtv on the flange and ring. carefully put it back together and let it all cure before starting.
