200X Running poorly when Headlight is on

    Hey All,

I have an '84 200X that starts easy, runs great through full range, and idles perfect. HOWEVER, I have been noticing when I am riding at night and my headlight/taillights are on, it will sputter when the throttle is coming down from throttling high back down to idle. Basically when I'm running and then slow to stop it will run a little funky, and then again when im running low and then give it some gas to accelerate. It has never died or acted like it wants to, you can just tell a difference in performance when the lights are on. This is probably a NEWB question or something real easy! ANY info is appreciated.

    Thanks!

Just a guess here but maybe the stator is going bad and not producing enough power and when you have the headlights on it's drawing too much power and it's taking away the spark.

+1 on ghosts answer, almost undoubtedly. The 200x lighting and source coils are barely sufficient when new. Rickystator makes upgrades for both.

The lighting and ignition / stator coils are two separate entities . If the lighting coil is affecting how the motor is running their is an issue in your wiring harness causing a short to the stator coil possibly a grounding problem as well .

THANKS guys a bunch, one more question. At Ricky Stator there are two coils, LIGHTING COIL and SOURCE COIL. Is it a proper measure to purchase both? Or is the LIGHTING COIL the only one i need.

To properly determine what you need, tests are required, as outlined in the service manual for your model. Someone that has the tests specs handy may chime in here.

Replacing both would not be a waste of time or money if they are the original coils on the bike, in my opinion.

^ i would swap out both if it was me.
I would also take the harness off and look for any pinches in the wires to ensure no shorts are happening then install once it is confirmed.

Could it be that maybe one ofc your bulbs are wrong? My 110 had the wrong bulb in the tail light and it severely dimmed my head light until I removed it

    DDanger,

Good question. I already went ahead and put new front and rear bulbs in but issue remains. I think I am going to go the easy route and buy a stator/cover from a donor 200X and swap them out. This way I dont have to remove the Rotor.
