The ATC Formerly Known as Zongshen X

This project just kind of happened one day. I was looking at a frame and a shock and the next thing i knew I had the frame stripped down and hanging in the garage, so i figured i better paint it. As always, my pics are taken with a $50 phone, so bear with my lackluster photography.

Not much money or cool expensive stuff involved in this build, but its a fun one!

Here is the frame with a metallic primer.

All other painted parts were painted and cleared with VHT then baked in the oven.

Thanks! The color changes a LOT depending on where the light hits it. I haven't tried to match any parts with that color yet but I don't think it will be easy.....

The engine is not actually a clone I guess, but from what info I have gathered it is built very similar internally and externally to a yamaha tw200 engine.

Its almost a bolt in, only the head to frame mount plates need to be swapped or made. I have a set from another Chinese dirt bike I tore down that are going to work for me. I haven't tightened the lower front mount up yet, but it looks like it may need a shim washer or two to be perfect. Sprocket lines up very nicely as well.

This engine is a 198cc electric start overhead cam. I will have to fabricate an exhaust for it. I should have done it before I painted stuff but I didnt know I was using this engine until it hopped in there one day.

The engine is 20 years newer than the blown engine that was in the trike.

That Yammi clone looks very similar to the honda original.....uncanny how similar. I bet you were dancing around the garage when it bolted right in.

Im a Triumph, BSA nut. Word around Ton Up circles was Yammi copied the Bonneville 650 to an extent when designing the XS650 mill.

Well, I expected a fight for sure, had the tools ready and all. I attempted to test fit it in another bike, and it didn't line up, it looked as though I would have to drill some new holes in the upper rear case mount. Turns out that frame was bent.

The fins and topend are actually much more similar to the big squared top end on the tw200. The 200x top end and fins are much more irregular and tapered. This engine kinda looks like a Yamaha jug and head with a Honda cdi, in my opinion.

Its a 69mm bore, the exhaust port is in a completely different position than the Honda. I have also heard that Yamaha cams may fit in this engine.

Not back to the computer yet but heres a couple more pics I have stored on the tablet.

Despite recent reports, the 200x does NOT have amazing stock suspension. These pics show the 250r rear shock and res bolted up. Gained some travel and adjustability over the stock shock. It will sit higher unloaded, but with race sag will be just right for jumping it.

Actually iron chop, the xs650 engine is derived from a Hosk 500 twin, which ended up at 650 years later.

    Hi Dohc;

    Hey, leave Hawaii rider alone.

Cool build, love the way that engine looks. Nice color choice too. Are you spraying clear over it to protect the paint and give it that lustrous shine?

    I’ll be watching too.

Are you sure a 200X exhaust won't bolt up?

Ill go ahead and post the rest of the progress pics up to this point. I put new bushings and seals in the forks so they wont be leaking, and i added shims to both for extra preload on the tired springs.

Might be a while till i get any more pics, builds come second to selling parts so mine go kinda slow. im thinking it took about two weeks to get this far, just working on it when i can.

Some may notice that i had to weld on some new grab bar mount tabs at the very back of the frame. they were broken off as they often are, so i cut the mount tabs off a junk 250r frame and welded them on.

Yes jb i am certain the stock exhaust does not bolt up. The position of the port turns the pipe to an angle that just wont pass through the frame. the width of the jug is also a factor.

Just saw your post barnett but yes everything that is painted is heavily clear coated, my phone makes it look like matte in some pics, and thanks for the compliments!

Sure no prob, another Dohc killer resto!

What do you plan for a pipe?
My friend in NW Scottsdale [where I may or may not live ] can make one if you need but it might not be cost effective. He's made a ton of stuff for the auto factories for the desert races plus lot's of bike stuff too. Let me know and I'll give you his info.

I know you missed your furry little friend so I brought him out for you.

Hi Dohc, I heard you missed me. I missed you too. Do you think maybe I could ride it when you're done?

Lol yes Timmy the baby fur seal can ride it as long as its finished before hunting season.....

Ya definitely no budget for a pipe being built, but luckily ive built dozens so i can handle it.

just did a full exhaust on an s10 blazer yesterday morning ughhh. Nothing like welding upside down in a four inch square space with molten metal falling all over me to start the day!!!

    Hello DohcBikes;

Hey...are ya gonna put some "Shredders" on it?

Oh boy...thank you Dohc, you could just duct tape my little flippers to the controls and off I go...Wheee! Of course I obviously don't have any legs so it might be kinda hard to shift but don't worry about that, I'll manage somehow.

Hey, I thought if I got me one of these keen looking old helmets it might keep the sharp pointed things on the ends of the sticks they try to whack me with from poking lots of tiny holes in my furry little head. Or maybe it'll make me look mean and they'll just get scared when they see me and just run away. What do ya think?

Oh, I've been practicing my mean, scary face too...do you wanna see it?

Well cool, you're doin far better than me in that category because a pipe builder I am NOT, lol.

Do you plan to use Prefabulated Amulite for it?

Perhaps your 9 volt battery needs a recharge.
