    Tecate wheel/tire suggestions

    I need rear tires and wheels for my 85 Tecate. I decided to repair a leak today, and in the process of putting the tire back on the crappy bent up aluminum rim, it bent even more. I threw the bar for the tire changer, shouted some choice expletives and came in to start shopping.

    Unfortunately, the sites I've used for my Hondas don't seem to go back that far on Kawasaki. I need a reasonably priced set of rims and tires. I'm thinking of a Holeshot HD or maybe the 6-ply Maxxis, but not for any intelligent reason except that I've seen them on other trikes. I am not a racer and never will be, so I don't see myself ever on a track, but I do get out in the boonies and I'd like to avoid tires that are prone to punctures. Rocky Mountain ATV has nice packages (I don't want to mount them myself) for other machines, but the builder doesn't work for this machine. I have learned this much: the bolt pattern is 4/156. I am tempted to go with the .190 Douglas rims, which are plain enough, but I really don't think I need anything special, just reasonably strong.

    There were 22x11-8 Kenda Scorpions on there originally. What was stock on the Tecate, 8 or 10-inch? Why to go one or the other?

    I know tire choices are very subjective, but I'd still like some suggestions to help point me in the right direction.

    Early Banshees also used a 4x156 on the back. Sometimes, decent used sets show up on eBay. Should help build a package on RMATV - use a 90 model Banshee.

    84 Tecates used a 4x4 bold pattern and 10 inch, steel wheels.
    85+ Tecates used the 4x156 pattern and 10 inch, aluminum, wheels.

    You generally can't put 8 inch wheels on the 4x156 bolt pattern - not enough room on the wheel for the hubs.

    When they were new, the short sidewall of the 10" wheel/tire combo gave the T3s a handling advantage over the competition.

    My 85 T3 has some Shredders on it I think - 20x11x10 if I recall. They're fine on the trails but I don't do much trail riding on the T3. I also have a set of 22x11x10 8 paddle Haulers. They're good in the sand, of course.

    That tells you the 85 tecate takes a 10x8 4/156 rear rim and gives you ITP replacement rim model numbers.
    Find another atv that uses the same tire size and rim model number... then just build a package for that quad.

    I assume you are looking for rear tires? You have to be a little more careful with fronts and make sure the offset is correct and your caliper will clear.

    What was stock on the Tecate, 8 or 10-inch? Why to go one or the other?

    Below are the accurate rim and tire sizes for the 86 thru 87 T3.

    Rim 10 x 8.5
    Tire 20 x 11 x 10 Dunlop 4 ply.

    Out of all the tire/wheel combos I tested at Kawi, I selected this size because I wanted to do this.

    Below are a few different types and price ranges. All are 4 ply. 6 ply is slightly more resistant to punctures but not by a huge amount. In other words a nail will EASILY go through both.

    6 ply tires will reduce performance slightly due to their extra weight, however if you are not racing, does it really matter much?

    6 ply will also give a slightly firmer/harsher ride.

    Taller tires provide a slightly softer ride, more ground clearance but are more “tippy” in the turns. You also might want to change your gearing to compensate for the increased diameter of the taller tires.

    BTW, there was nothing wrong with the package builder. It just didn't like Chrome for some reason. When I placed the order I was back on my regular laptop and it worked fine in Firefox.

    Tires/Wheels showed up today. They look really nice, but I sure feel stupid. The hubs are NOT 4/156. They look like they're actually 110. Damn. That explains how there were 8" wheels on there. The hubs are round instead of a star. Do I need the "star" type?

    Factory will be 4/156. The Polaris predator also uses a 4/156 pattern thou I cannot say if the splines in the hubs are the same.

    Ah man - that sucks.

    Got a picture of the hubs you have?

    Did you measure them? Measure center of lug to center of opposite lug. 4x4 looks a lot like 4x100 and 4x110 but they're different.

    I'm just curious.

    You're right, it's 4 x 4". They must be 84 hubs. So are the splines the same if I buy a set of 85 hubs?

    yes the 85 has same coarse spline as 84 but with 156mm bolt pattern.

    I suggest you use a torque wrench and torque the swing arm pivot, rear carrier bolts, axle nuts and wheel nuts to spec and not just until they feel tight enough, then check them all after a days ride. One of the probs is that some people would not monitor the axle nuts and they would ride the bike with them slightly loose which caused the hubs to wear slightly in the spline area even though the cotter pin held the nut in place somewhat. A worn hub will come loose more quickly than a non worn one. The carrier bolt threads can also get a bit stretched over the years and a set of new grade 8 ones from the hardware store can't hurt.

    Nah, good advice, and you've apparently got my number, because I wouldn't have done it until something fell off. Thanks.

    Now I just need to find a set of '85 hubs. Ebay's looking pretty thin today, unless I want to pay $50 for ONE. Not gonna happen. Are there any other machines that use the same hub? I notice the '86 looks like it has different splines....
