I'm going to look at an '82 250r today. I've never owned or even ridden a two stroke. Is there anything I should look for?

An 82 is a great trike first year with disc at both ends. Normal trike stuff to look at cracks in frame overall condition the usual stuff. On the first gen r's check the set pans they like to rust, DC plastic's have new plastic ones for about $75 shipped. Factory pipes like to split on the lower seam. Check for case damage by the front sprocket. If it is a running engine check the head gasket for leaks, if it leaks odds are the head is warped a little. Non of these things would really be deal breakers but things to consider when looking at one to buy.
Rebuilding and riding trikes everyday and lovin every minute.

Ok so I bought it. When I was test riding it it died( my fault). Now the kick starter won't even move. What could be the problem?
What was your fault to make it die? You had mixed 2stroke gas in it right? When it quit did it move again or was it locked up?

I wasn't used to the high gearing. The transmission seems fine but the kick starter won't move.
Will it bump start?

I have to get it home and I will try.
Just wondering if you seized her up.You did have fresh mixed gas in it right?

I was just test riding it. So I assume the previous owner mixed the gas.
You can't assume that the seller knows squat about the machine. When I bought my Tri-Z I asked the guy to put gas in it so I could ride it. I rode it down the block and ended up buying it. When I got it home I drained that tank only to discover he put straight gas in it. I was lucky I did general maintenance checkup first or I would have seized the engine.
A frozen kick starter is odd. You need to determine whether it is the piston/crank or the kick start mechanism that is the culprit. I've got an 82 R and they are pretty easy to work on--no cooling system to fuss with.
I agree that you cant trust the seller. Put it in a high enough gear like 3rd or 4rth and push it without the clutch in, if it dont move you seized the top end I would bet.

I think it's seized. It smells like straight gas in the tank.
That sucks but look on the bright side. You learned something and it will be fresh after the rebuild. 2 smokes are easy. You said you were test driving it. My test drives are before I hand over cash, if you havent paid for it I wouldnt. But if you have your stuck with it probably same warranty as me 60 feet or 60 seconds.

I rode it before I bought it. I just really wanted it. I know a guy that should be able to fix it for me. I don't think I have the skills to do it correctly.
