    *** Plastic polishing ***

    Hello all,

    School me, here, please.

Plastic polishing - what is the procedure/technique and product to use??? I have seen plastic items (gas tanks, fenders) on ebay awhile back that had a shine like jewellery. How is this accomplished??? Thanks in advance. BK3

I would first try and figure out what your plastics are made out of then Google how to polish that type of plastics. I think you can sand them and go all the way to like a 2500 grit wet or dry paper and it will not only take out scratches but should get it smooth and ready for some sort of waxing. Not sure though. the only time I did this was in school with a piece of Plexiglas in shop class, you'll need a lot of patience. beware though, a lot of stuff on ebay may be just re painted... and plastic gas tanks don't seem to last when painted, at least mine isn't...the paint is bubbling up, its almost as if the fumes are seeping through the plastic tank and wrecking the paint.

the fumes from gas will make spray paint bubble and fall off if its right by the cap. if you spill a little gas on spray paint it will bubble and fall off for sure. I would just wet sand and then polish with pledge.

Wet sand, start coarser (220-500), finish with 2000-2500. Use a heat gun to smooth it over and get some shine back, then I like to use 0000 steel wool and hit it with the heat gun again. But it never gets that like new shine, at least not with the amount of time I put in.

Wax looks great, until you spill gas on it. No real way around that. I don't even bother waxing anymore, better to look a little dull then have chalky white wax.

true... wax will get into any deeper scratches and its a b***h to get out! there's a video on redoing atv plastics on you tube, the guy says to only sand in one direction then the next course of sanding you go the opposite way or something like that, but he said never go on circles or in all different directions.. go in straight lines. Me? Im too lazy to put in that much time, it sucks but, it is what it is. ill just live with my scratches which aren't that bad except for the one cracked area on the fender down where the plastic meets the rubber part near your foot. carefully placed stickers hide a lot too! What id really like to do is find some plastics off a newer machine or newer plastics off like a tri z or so, see if they be able to be retro fit to my DXN.
