Probably condensation in the cylinder, or possibly oil leaking past the valve seals (althought that should be blue smoke if valve seales are the case). In any case I wouldn't worry about it, anything old is gonna smoke when it starts up cold.

I believe your R is water cooled, right? If so, white smoke is generally coolant or water burning. I would check your fluid level and see if it is diminishing. the most common areas for a head gasket to blow is between the waterjacket and the cyclinder, thus causing the symptom you described.
If your coolant level is constant, then it may be condensation.
