    Need 200X/Bassani Education

Ok, fellas, I have one on my '85 and wanted to know if it can be "modified." I have two issues: 1) I'm in California. Needs a spark arrestor to not get hassled. Can I outfit the Bassani somehow? 2) It's LOUD! Gives me a headache on longer rides. Can it be packed? It looks like it has a core/insert, but there's no screws to pull it with. Looks like the end of the pipe is rolled and tacked. Would I need to mess with that? I don't want to destroy an old Bassani if it would mean I'd have to hack it up...

    Thanks for any info.

Depending on the diameter, you may be able tp modify it so that SuperTrapp baffle discs could be used. I think they qualify as a spark arrestor? Others smarter than me may chime in........

I dont know much about that basani but I had picked up a DG RCM that had been modified with supertrap disks and it had blew the seam apart on the muffler from to much back compression.

I would not modify or do anything to the Bassani. If your going to mod it to accept Supertrapp discs just buy a Supertrapp pipe silencer combo.

In my humble opinion here are some options.

Offer to trade the Bassani here or your preferred classified location for a Supertrapp or forest approved Spark arrested pipe.

Sell the Bassani here or your preferred classified location and buy a Supertrapp pipe.

Sell the Bassani here or your preferred classified location and buy stock pipe and silencer, you will probably have a few dollars left over.

I've had those notions, too, Mr. Clean. Haven't seen many Supertrapps that seem worth a darn, though. I have the trike jetted for the Bassani and didn't want to go back to stock. Hmm....

It's been a lot of years but...

I once had a Bill's pipe on a 185s. Holy Crap it was loud. Repacking made no difference. I bring this up because it was very similar to the Bassani I had on my last 200X:

But, I was able to modify it (the old Bill's pipe) to have a spark arrestor. With the core out, I either added or just bent some of the perforated screen over the inner hole. Viola - (almost) instant spark arrestor.

    Some things to consider:
    - back then, the test for a spark arrestor was inserting a rod into a muffler to see if it had a stop of some sort.
    - while this was a functional arrestor, it was not USFS approved. Since your in the Socialist Republik of California (nothing personal - I grew up there and would love to move back except for the state government, taxes, crowding... ), functional won't matter without the USFS tag.

Maybe something like this could be added if you get the Bassani apart?

As I recall, the Bill's pipe had screws or rivets holding the core in (it was 30 years ago).
I have no clue how to get the Bassani apart, though.

I have yet to hear an aftermarket 200x pipe that is not really loud. Stock with stock jetting for compliancy and quiet. In my opinion.

The supertrapps arent bad IMHO, barely louder than stock, or at least the one that I have (not the race version). Its not in use but not for sale sorry. I would not modify the bassani as Mike (mr clean) suggested, but would rather try and find a cheaper stock one and fix it like a blast and repaint, or just leave it how it is. I sold my stocker to a member just last year. It will fix both your spark arrestor problem and your over-loudness.

I'm thinking I don't want to alter the Bassani. Funny part is, throughout the build and parts bikes, I probably had two or three stock pipes that I've since sold.

What sucks is that I just got the Bassani dialed with a 118 jet. Thinking I'll still keep it for desert runs. Maybe just get a stocker setup for the mountains... maybe fab up something from a buddy's crf450x stocker. That would give me arrestor AND flow... thoughts?

The problem with a 450 exhaust, there is a such thing as too much flow (larger diameter pipe), which can affect your lower end, or at least thats what I have heard.

Hard to believe it would flow more than that Bassani. Darn thing is a hollow megaphone.
