85 BR electrical issue

Just can't get my head around electrical.
Trike won't start with the neutral switch wire connected with or without a battery. It starts fine with the wire disconnected (with a kick obviously) but nothing while it is. Neutral switch is good since the light comes on in neutral while connected.
Wire connected, starter turns good but no start and it won't kick either. Wire disconnected and first kick it's off and running. I can connect the wire after it's running and no problems. Sometimes when its connected the (brand new)key switch won't turn it off but only sometimes. If I connect the wire and pull it just as I push the start button, it fires right up to.
Other than that it works really well. I think it has a small clutch issue and hard water riding will kill it(exposed electrical somewhere). Had it out tonight for about 3 hours and had a blast passing quads and generally proving them all wrong about three wheelers.
Any ideas on which uber expensive component I should order. I have a solenoid on the way to me since it was pretty cheap but I have no idea if that's the problem or not.

some motorcycle shop guy did a FULL tilt procedure on this problem
recently.
Not a total trike guy but rock star mechanic.
I have one that spins great but will only start when I let OFF the starter IF its spinning fast enuf to carry over.
Kick starts in 1/2 kick.
The mastermind found a weak stator output after trying everything else.

try 250 es or sx stator and it should pop up.

Thanks for responding friend. I thought of the search but couldn't settle on terms. Wasn't sure what I was looking for.
Seems to be a ground issue. Once it's warm I can hold the start button and then disconnect the neutral wire and away she goes. Starts real easy. So neutral wire/ground connected = no start at all and once it's disconnected it goes like stink and I can reconnect the neutral wire. Time to tear into the harness. Eliminate the hacks that are in there and slowly trickle down to the real issue. Note my facial expression of gloom. Might be easier to make a whole new one. That way I'll learn the whole system but involves tearing the whole bike down to damn near nothing. I don't mind that but I'm going to need more room to work for that to happen.
Right now I'm searching for a new job so I can move me and my mini horse (purebred king doberman) to a new place. Don't really have room to work here anyway. It runs with a kick so I'm happy for now. I just like everything to work proper. Heavily addicted to bells and whistles.

I got accepted to regional college for a motorcycle mechanics course that would lead to an apprenticeship on the same day my room mate (his house) decided to move his fat @ss girlfriend in. Well threes a crowd so I had to decline the schoolin' so I could move. I'll never forgive him for skewering my future.
If I was still in my twentys I would autograph his face with my fist but at forty he's lucky I've gained some maturity.

so you have wire hack?
I think full harnesses are cheap on ebay.
and folks on here surely have them too.
Mine actually corrected itself.
Would NOT fire whilke cranking but would start when I let OFF the starter button if it was spinning fast enough.
Now it works perfectly.
Maybe from running it, it cleaned some corroded connector somewhere.

I have 2 patents, both stolen but I've got what I need.
Today is fix it day for me and actually have help for a change.
Drove the saab to Canada (25 hr r/t) without brakes and trikes are
sprouting in the orchard.
Someone actually dropped one off in the driveway so I gotta go see what that's about.
Not sure what to do first but that's a nice problem to have.
