Whats not original on my atc?

I took some pics, the tank, nerf bars and maybe the rack I think are not original, it also has a 9 inch front alum wheel? I checked the frame sticker, says 86 250sx made 10/85. Has my front end been swapped? I think the drum is on the wrong side.

Does the frame say its an 85 or 86? But like you said the tank, racks different. Also the tires, handle bars, grips, and various parts attached to the handle bars, thumb throttle etc. Front fender, gas line, breather tube on the back end. Chrome housing for the driveshaft??? If its an 86 the headlight should be white also with the tank.. The 85 had black fork boots also..

The frame sticker says its an 86. My wheel tire came in today, I followed the recommendations from the board but it seems my front drum is on the wrong side? I ordered the size listed below.

You are correct, the drum is on the wrong side. This is due to the forks being on the wrong sides. The other clue is that your axle is on the front side of the forks. It should be on the back side of the fork. The solution to both of these problems is to pull the fork tubes out of the tripples and just swap left-for-right.

Have you downloaded the service manual for this machine yet? You can find all sorts of useful information about your machine in there such as which side your brake drum should be on...

I tried to pull the manual from there, it is not showing any valid link. I figured someone flipped it, is there a reason? Like stretching the wheelbase a bit? I have a Clymer manual, and planned to pull the forks to put new boots on and do the front brake. Should I leave the wheel tire axle all bolted together when I swap sides to keep it aligned, or does it matter? I am new to anything with front forks. I did change the front fork fluid though.

It makes it pretty tough if you try leaving the front wheel/axle installed to pull the fork tubes. You're better off pulling the front wheel and then you can pull each fork tube separately. There really isn't any trick to lining things back up. Just get the forks in the tripple at the same height (compare the top of the tube to the top triple clamp). When you're putting the front wheel back on, be sure to clean up the front axle and grease it good (or even better, coat it with anti-sieze compound). This will just ensure you (or the next guy 20 years from now) won't have a problem with the axle seizing up in there.

I'm not sure why they'd try flipping it. You're right, it makes the wheelbase a bit longer, but this really messes up the front end geometry. It might not be handling like it should be. Definitely put it back how it should be.

Great, thanks. I have new bearings for the front and rear, put the rears on today. Will do the fronts tomorrow. Also put a new swingarm boot on today, and have new fork boots.

While your flipping your forks back and installing your new rim/tire, you may want to throw a new set of fork boots on it as well. Yours looked cooked.
