Project- "Never Gonna Happen" (my fading KXT500 dream)

Was supposed to do this years ago when I picked up this KX500 motor and misc parts in um 2008, and by the looks of it- "never gonna happen".

There was a really nice KXT500 build on here with videos posted of it blasting up sand mountain, he had the best custom swingarm and pipe and stuff and I should have copied his build then.

The KX500 motor has so much compression, I could barely kick it. I started and rode a couple LT500R back in the day without issue. And trying to get it to fire just a couple drops of gas was just not happening. The motor has been sitting for years, the NOS PSI pipe sat too long, is going to need to be bent to fit, radiator would fit on left side. Anyway, I just want to start the motor for a couple seconds, if possible.

This is also forcing me to look through my parts and figure out what I have, I found a 84 KX250 bottom end I thought I sold. Great more crap I dont need that is just in the way.

Ben had a compression release put in the head and that really helped. Fabio/tecate dan and jason barton both did the same on their half liters, its the best modification for these motors. Second best is a hydraulic clutch. Get that bike completed, theres nothing like being WOT and thinking,"I somehow managed to make something thats too fast"
Looking for a Bassani silencer for a 2nd gen tecate, the style with the movable mount. 1st gen will work

picked up some kx500 parts and got this Cobra silencer that supposedly was on the bike. Try to figure out if it was for KX5 or just universal or off another bike

I like the snap ring for dis-assembly and repacking

Sticker would have said "Hush Puppy Cobra"

having trouble cause pic uploader says my files are not valid picture formats ?????

If you can't kick it over don't. Buy the proper decompression head so you can kick it over like a 125. They are about $400 unless your wanna rig your own. I always say if your gonna do it, then do it right.

Are you sure there is not something else going on? I had a 90,91 and 92 KX500 and they where all very easy to start as 500s go, my 85 CR500 was downright scary to kick over compared to the KX500s (85 CR500 loved to kick back).

Are you using the full length KX500 kickstart lever?

I thought it might be fluid locked or from the 2 stroke oil i used in cylinder for storage. Motor is back out of frame. Was hoping to try my first rebuild of a shock, then put swing arm back on so it's off the stand.

I am using full length KX5 kick start lever. I am out of motors to use so the KX500 is all i have left to try to fire up.

Have you had a chance to do a compression test? I do not recall the KX500 being a very high compression motor.

Well I finally got to hear the motor run. That SOB of a motor is hard to kick. My foot throbs a little every time I think about it.

Worked on testing KX250 / Tecate electrical parts and finally pieced together a working system...so I pulled that motor out.

In went the KX500 motor. Hooked up electrical. Put on FMF pipe and PWK 39mm that was jetting for a LT500. Hooked up a throttle cable. Made a gas tank. Stuck a motorcycle boot on my right foot.

It fired about the 6th kick. And proceeded to rev up but not a death rev. Jumped off and hit the kill switch. Scary...HA HA !!!

Let the smoke clear and thought it over. Just put more gas in it because the bowl wasnt full enough and running out of gas.

Kicked it to life again and it sat there idling and smoking a lot. No coolant in it. Shifted a couple gears and watched main shaft move for a few seconds then just shut it off. I think it may have been in first gear when I started it.

A relief it starts after sitting around for 8 years untested, I should run it the KX250 chassis, but really think I should sell it.

Originally got it complete off ebay, but picked it up locally like 5 minutes away. Was off a bike someone wrecked the forks and front end on or whatever. Seller threw in a bunch of extras like carb, tank, radiators, and rear shock that I sold for $150. Which is what I paid for the new carb. I got about $600 into it.

Don't give up on it yet. Every day I find more and more problems with my tecate and all I want to do is sell it. I always change my mind haha.
