anyone heard of a kx125 motors in early tecates back in the day?

Hey guys, I thought I saw some info from an old magazine about guys back in the day putting a kx125 motor in 84/85 tecates to compete in under 200cc class. I cant find it now, and I am picking up a 84 Tecate tomorrow and was thinking it would be kinda cool to do something like that. Was just seeing if anyone had heard or had info on that.

    Thanks

Also wondering if I want to change the 84 frontend to an 85 disc setup if I need to swap the forks too? I know I need a rim, front hub, disc, caliper and brake stuff. But unsure of forks.

    Thanks

yes itll require the 85 forks. as they contain the mount for the caliper. or if youre handy with a welder you could weld new tabs on the 84 forks

I knew I just read something about this the other day, and I found it for you. Maybe this is the same thing that sparked your interest.

Scroll down to reply #11 by Polar-Bus, where he says, "I worked for a Kawasaki dealer years ago, and the owner raced Tecates' on the dirt oval at Loudon NH back in 84 and 85. He raced the "200cc" class, and what he did was yank the 250cc engine and was putting in 84 KX125 engines. Anyone who remembers the BRUTAL power of the '84 KX125 would attest to that combo kicking the crap out of any other 3 wheeler in the class. Racers were purchasing a brand new Tecate, a brand new KX125 and Gary (the owner/racer) would build the race ready package. He built like 4 of those 125cc Tecate's."

I know an old pro racer ( # 2 Gordon Yancey) from back in the day and raced one.He still might have it.I talked to him in 2010 and he said he still had his 250 Tecate racer. The 125 he had/has is cool .Him and I were in a drag race I had a tough time beating it with my week old 85 250 r.
