    Cool 1984 Honda 200es Resurrection

So Thursday I purchased a 1984 Honda 200es for $150. It looks great and has all the original plastic and is unmolested. The problem is it has been parked for the last 4 years in a garage and needs some TLC. So when I got it home the first thing I did was pull the seat, battery, air intake, and carb. I replaced the battery and completely tore down the carb and found exactly what I thought I would, TONS of varnished fuel. I know pictures are worth a 1000 words so I will upload some at the bottom of this post. So I tore into the carb cleaning everything jets, channels, bowl, float, valve, ect... Once I was satisfied it was clean I replaced all the fuel lines and put it all back together to see if she would crank. It would turn over but would not fire. So I sprayed a little starter fluid to see if that would kick it off. Which it did but only for a split second and it died. After a couple more failed attempts I decided to pull the carb again and see what was up. When I tore it down this time I found that the bowl was full of fuel, but it didn't seem fuel was being delivered. So I pulled the jets and they were clogged again. I cleaned and replaced the jets and assembled the carb and re-installed it. Tried to start the engine again and no luck. Again started with starter fluid but not with out. Now I am baffled...Do I pull the carb again and see if more varnished fuel has broken up and clogged the jets. Do I just buy a new Chinese carb? Do I buy an OEM rebuild kit? Do I pour a big bowl of carb cleaner up and soak the entire thing dissembled in it? Any help or insight would be amazing!!! If you have any questions feel free to ask! Thanks in advance for all the help!

I'll second that, works like a charm and you get a carb that looks like new. Be sure and get all the plastic and gasket pieces off, it could melt those.

When you pull it out of the dip and rinse it off with some spray carb cleaner, and stick that little straw attachment in all the holes to make sure it's clear (wear safety glasses, getting that junk in your eye's ain't fun.)

The label will probably caution you about aluminum carbs in the dip, but I've found no damage at all if you just soak for 24 hours or less. Off the shelf dip isn't that potent.

Are you using a rebuild kit? If not, one should come with several new jets and gaskets just to eliminate all that as issues.

Very nice looking 200 Big Red, I had one a while, wasn't nearly as nice as yours, but it was stout as a mule.

Ok! That is a great idea! I will go get some today. Where is the best place to buy parts for these? I assume online somewhere! I do not currently have a rebuild kit I am going to order one now I think or see if the local ATV store has one. Also, I installed an inline fuel filter between the tank and the carb for good measure.

    Thanks for the help!

Also check the tank to make sure there is no gunk in there as well.

Over the last few weeks I have been using Ebay vendors, got a few carb kits, a fender, and seat foam / cover all for pretty good prices. I've had good luck with that so far. I don't deal with my local ATV shops, they proved to me in the past they just mark up and re-sell the same parts I buy direct online.

I'm about to buy another batch of parts for my Big Red but where I buy will probably depend on what parts I need. I'd say a good deal of them will end up being bought off ebay unless I find another source, like Bikebandit or Amazon.

So an update on the resurrection! Today I took the carb off and disassembled it and let it soak in Berryman. Man that stuff worked like a charm!!!! I reassembled everything and then tried to fire her up. She started on the first try but wouldn't hold an idle. So I adjusted the idle speed screw and it corrected the issue. I then decided to take her for a spin and man she rides amazing. Didn't have any problems at all shifted through all the gears, stopped great, no bogging or stumbling and no smoke. I can hardly believe it for $150 plus a battery and some fuel line. Here are some pictures! can you upload videos from your computer??

I got Big Red out this afternoon for a few pictures. She needs a bath but she seems to be running really well now! So now I would like to know what would y'all suggest needs to be done as preventative maintenance since its been sitting for the last 4 years. I have already changed the plug, air filter, fuel lines, and cleaned the carb. I know I need to change the oil for sure but what is next? Pictures below for your viewing pleasure!!
