I have some good working brake calipers that are just extra parts. I know if they sit on the shelf for some years they pry will freeze up. I was thinking of filling a plastic coffee can with new motor oil and putting the brake calipers in the oil for storage. Any reason this would be bad?

I've seen moisture trapped under grease and oiled brake drums left outside.
Maybe marine fogging oil?
kind of a spray can thing or brake assembly grease? but I've seen that trap moisture too.

Other than the fact that you are going to be cleaning the crap out of them when you pull them out of the oil. If you don't want the piston seizing in the caliper why don't you take the pistons out? Seems like an easier/less messy solution to me.Originally Posted by ctk

I use CRC 656 marine. It doesn't dry. Best thing I have ever used to store parts.

I've used arms grease (trapped moisture and surface rusted the hell out a drag pipe), white parole im oil spray stuff (has worked VERY well in keeping my new crank clear), and I've got a few transmissions sitting in buckets of ATF and those are fine.
It's all personal preference honestly.
With a spray on substance you can bag it up and not have to worry about storage space. With oil stuff, it's in a container that takes up more room.
But yea, pull the calipers apart no matter what you decide. But be prepared to replace the o-rings when it's time to use them (if it's years down the road)
