Older Trike Rebuilds - How to deal with Obsolete Parts?

So I've been rebuilding my 1985 Honda ATC110. It's been going pretty smoothly. The parts I've needed have been generally available from one dealer or another. Until now...

43413-968-000 - Spring, RR Brake Arm Return

I've searched high and low for this part, but keep coming back to the same end - "Part Obsolete". That's it... No substitute. No alternative.

So what have YOU done to replace "OBSOLETE" parts on YOUR trikes? Can you offer any advice or suggestions?

And if you happen to have a spare Brake Return Spring for an '85 ATC110, I'm still in the market!

If you need brand new, then your search will take a long time and a lot of patience and a little luck. However, if used is fine then this site and e-bay are where you will find what you need. As an alternative, search craigslist in your area and the areas surrounding yours and look for a parts machine.

Your situation is the case with every 3-wheeler around. There isn't a single one of them that doesn't have a long list of obsolete parts.

why not go to a hardware store with your spring length and see if they have what you are looking for? I have found many things at hardware stores that way.

I've checked with most of the local hardware stores, as well as two of the big chain stores, and no one has anything I can use even as a basis. I thought I had something when I bought a random MTD torsion spring that had the right diameter and wire size, but of course when I got it home it was wound the wrong direction (smh). All the other basic springs I have found only have like a 1/2" diameter, and the broken one is about 1".

I'll just have to keep looking...

Believe it or not car shows/swap meets can have some amazing finds in them. The last one I went to had a nice original 200, with boxes of parts for all kinds of trikes and quads.

Thanks for the advice! This was another reason that I joined the site - networking and a resource to find other local enthusiasts and/or clubs that I can draw on to find such events. There is strength in numbers!

I would have to think that some of the springs inter change from different models . I have one from a 85 es that has a 1 1/8 " id . One end pins in the back plate the other wraps around the arm . The clocking may be different .
That being said , I bet there are dozens of them to be had either from this board , or E Bay .

I have a couple of different ones listed above that are parts machines. I will look tomorrow and see what I have.

When looking for an obsolete part I pray and look on eBay and call different people until my eyes and ears are bleeding. usually after a few hours or a few days of searching I find my part. But the one part that gave me the most trouble was my muffler for my 86 125m it took me 3 months to find that muffler.

Remarkably mufflers I can find... They are usually not in the greatest of shapes. And the prices I have seen on Ebay for an original OEM rival those of new aftermarket! I know I will need to do SOMETHING with mine after this winter, but I think that will involve simply welding a new plate over the bottom where it is rusting out...

If you need springs check mail order parts houses like Pegasus auto racing, mcmaster Carr, or even grainger industrial supply.

yea I can find mufflers for most bikes but the 86 125m is a strange bird it was only made for 2 years with a limited number on both years so finding parts can be challenging. But alas its half the fun anyway.

Copy and paste it in your search engine..Amazon also has some 110 brake parts too..I bought some parts from both places before.. Also mfg supply has alot of atc parts.
