You can use an 86 axle or trx axle as well. The only difference is the sprocket. 82 will not fit.

Noooo. With all due respect Steveman, you are misinformed.

    for OEM axles:

you can only use an 85 axle with an 85 carrier. thats it.

86 and TRX stuff will interchange, but not with 85 carrier or axle

The carrier is different but the axle is the same size.

An 85 axle wont work in an 86 up carrier because of the sprocket hub

thats what i meant. the sprocket hubs on OEM axles are not removeable and therefore the 85 axle and sprocket hub will not work in anything other than an 85 carrier

aftermarket axles with removeable sprocket hubs can interchange between all years and carriers, provided you have the proper sprocket hub to match the carrier.

I hope this explanation clears this up for you guys:

You cannot use an '85 axle in an '86-89 carrier because the sprocket hub will hit the carrier.

But, you can use an '86-89 axle in the '85 carrier as long as you use the '86-89 style sprocket and mounting bolts.

    Correct!

I am using 86-89 axles in both of my 85's. Just have to run the 86-on rear sprocket. I have no issues.

Don't know about running an 82 axle in an 85 though... I wouldn't think it would work.

i suppose i am misinformed. a buddy unknowingly put an 85 axle in an 86 carrier and it threw the chain into his case and ended his race season ... on a test ride
