    Ytm 200ern re-build thread

A little background on this bike, it was my grandpa's. It was one of three 3 wheelers my cousins all used to ride around on as kids. My uncle had a YTM225DX and my Dad had a KLT160. He parked it in his barn about 2000, when he got too sick to ride it anymore, and he passed away in 2004. At one point, one of my cousins removed the engine and tore it down in an ill fated attempt to get it running again. and it has sat here in this condition ever since. My cousins and uncles have been urging me to try and get it running again, after I did the same with my dad's old KLT160. So last December I loaded it up in my truck and drove it from Ohio to Illinois. The plan is when it is complete, to take it back out to Ohio for the rest of my family to enjoy.

Over the past few months, I've finally been able to get started on it. Here is some of my progress so far. Cleaned up the plastics, and wiring harnesses, New oversized piston and rings, rebuilt clutch, stripped down and painted the frame. Next step will be to mount the engine and rear axle in the frame. Thanks to Mr. Sound for the seat, carburetor, and some other spare parts that were missing.

Looks good, those machines are rock solid. The frame looks nice, motor looks clean. How is the electrical stuff? How big did you go on the OS cylinder and piston?

I went .050 over on the piston. Luckily you can still get these from Yamaha through partzilla.com. I was surprised how many parts for this Yamaha are still available, because on my kawasakis, and Hondas, there is almost nothing.

The electrical stuff was all in pretty good shape, luckily this machine was parked under a roof for the last 15 years. it was just dusty and greasy. I used a little simple green on the harnesses and connectors and they cleaned up like new.

Those are rock solid machines, the best I've ever had for woods riding.

I've made some major progress over the last few weeks. I was finally able to get her running today. After some minor carb adjustments, it fired right up and ran great. took her for a spin around the yard, all 5 gears, plus reverse works great. Now i just have to get working on restoring the fenders.

Very nice. I really like that model of trike. Always nice to rebuild a machine that has some family memories too!
