85R Intake Insulator and 38mm Airstriker

So after way too many hours dorking with my stock 34 mm Keihin, I finally decided to buy a new 38mm Airstriker (thanks for the push yaegerb!). It still isn't here yet, but I know that I will have some fit issues with the boot and insulator which I don't think will be a major issue.

The one problem that I can see being an issue is the "insulator band" that holds the intake insultor onto the carb. Has anyone gone from stock 34mm to a 38mm carb using the stock insulator? If so, did the stock band work or did you have to get another one? Would just a longer screw be enough to make the stock band work?

I just don't want to use a hose clamp from the auto parts store... I know there has to be a suitable replacement from another bike.

    Thanks in advance.

You can heat the stock one up and it will work. A UPP works too. I have a CR250 intake and reeds on mine. Bolts up but it is a little bit shorter.

Thanks guys. Yeah, I know that I will have to heat and stretch both the boot and intake insulator to accept the larger carb. It's just the band on the insulator side that I'm worried about. I am guessing that the new OD of the insulator will be about 51mm and I can only get about 49.5mm ID out of my stock band. I may just try a longer screw and see if it works (no air leaks). Thanks again.

Thanks. I went to pick up my cylinder today and killed some time looking through the shop's dead-end project bikes. Found an air boot band off of a CRF150 that looks like will be perfect. Cost?....$0 [emoji106]

If you go that route heat the boot in HOT water. Put the boot on the carb & clamp it, then put the boot on the engine. After a while the boot will keep the bigger size and not split, hit it with a little WD-40 so it doesn't crack. (Very old school tip that works)
