Without knowing the previous PO repairs had any work been completed requiring the clutch removal. Sounds like there's to much clearance between the clutch shaft rotating socket and the clutch lift rod. I see in your posted pic the lift rod setting in the main shaft, hopefully you placed it there after removing the lifter plate (bearing holder). Its been over twenty years since I worked on a 200x but maybe the spline washer was left out or this actually happened to me, installed a new clutch assembly and it wouldn't release, found the fiber plates where to thick which pushed the pressure plate further from the clutch shaft, larger gap, measured and replaced plates with correct thickness, worked fine.
