85 200x rear shock? Pics

Picked this beauty up the other day. Only thing really wrong with it is the rear shock. Are these somewhat easily rebuildable? Or is it something better to be sent off and done? Have done some front forks before, but never rear.

Also are there any other bikes that I could snag one off of that would work and / or be an upgrade from stock? Thanks in advance.

There is a few people on the site that offer rebuild services. Onformula1 is one that comes to mind. A local motorcycle shop should be able to assist. The internal wear items are hard to find for the average person. Although before you spend money you can change the oil in it and get it recharged w/ nitrogen.

Can maybe try that, I've never messed with one before. I have no bike shops under 1.5 hours from me, so try to do most myself when possible. When I was checking prices to rebuild the other night, most were over $200, so figured for that cost I could just buy a good used one off ebay for less than half that.

Be Careful if you use Race Tech parts their bushings don't fit in a 1985 Honda 200X and they don't carry any that do.

Also, that shock is the hardest ATC shock to rebuild, special suspension tools are needed, easy to mess up a few things.

Most 200X shocks on EBAY are bad, be careful (I doesn't matter what most the ads say) the people selling them are probably not a expert.

this what you do with the shock. Go buy a replacement shock head seal...then take it to someone who does suspension, I go to a shop (not a dealer) but a shop who rebuild lots of suspension for guys who race MX bikes. I clean everything up because who wants to work on something dirty and most will charge you do clean a shock up anyway.

I remove the spring, get it powder coated since its $10 then take everything to the race shop, drop it off and they do everything else. total cost always less then $75. There's really no need for people to charge you $400. It's a few seals, some new oil and nitrogen which any shop will have.

If you sent it out to people on ebay they just want to charge you $400 + and act like rebuild a rebuild able shock is something only a few selected by god can do.

Regarding Onformula1 and his shock service work

I had a 200x shock rebuilt/ refilled/ revalved.

I got to ride it around the yard last night and I can't believe the difference.

Milner definitely knows his trade and he does follow ups to make sure you don't need additional help either with the install, setup , or understanding suspension theory.

I learned alot from Milner and I'm definitely a better trike owner for it.

My recommendation is onformula1 for shock service especially 200x
